Worship Is More than Music

McDonald’s sells more than burgers, Amazon sells more than books, and a AAA membership offers far more benefits than just roadside assistance. We easily associate a brand name or well-known company with a limited sample of its products or services when it actually produces or offers much more. If we’re not careful, we do the same thing in the church when we view or portray worship as the musical part of Sunday morning gatherings. I say this because worshiping God encompasses so much more than music.

Worship Without Understanding Isn’t Worship

Body

“Entertainment disguised as worship isn’t worship. It’s idolatry. Ignorant worship is not worship at all. The ultimate authority on worship is Jesus, and He explained Himself very clearly in John 4.” - P&D

Five Ways to Beat Bitterness: #1 – Worship

Bitterness often begins as a normal—maybe even healthy—response to the losses, disappointments, failures, and unfairnesses of life. In that sense, the term “bitterness” is pretty much synonymous with mental, spiritual, emotional (and often also physical) pain.

But the Bible reveals that when indulged and nurtured, bitterness becomes an infection of the inner man that taints—and has the potential to corrupt—all our activities and relationships. I’ve written about the forms and harms of bitterness previously (see Bitterness Happens, and Six Ways Bitterness Can Poison Our Lives).

The good news is that both Scripture and experience (as application of biblical principles) point us toward some practical strategies for overcoming bitterness in our lives before, or even after, it becomes a chronic problem.

A Decent and Orderly Case for Raising Hands in Worship

Body

“We are rightly cautious about emotionalism. We don’t want distractions in the gathered assembly, and we certainly don’t want to draw attention to ourselves rather than Christ.Christ. Yet I think Scripture suggests that God wants more for us than internal, invisible worship.” - 9 Marks

Three Thanksgivings in Heaven

Body

“…as we consider the three instances of the word ‘thanks’ in Revelation, we could better ask, What will go on in heaven? These thanks are in the future. Nonetheless, this study is meant to encourage us to give thanks to God in the present, whether now or at any time of the year.” - P&D

It’s Not About You (And That Is Good News)

Body

“Every Christian knows it is both our duty and our delight to gather with God’s people on each Lord’s Day. But we may have less clarity on why we do this. Why is it so important that we gather specifically to worship?” - Challies

Are You Wired More Like an Artist or Engineer in Corporate Worship?

Body

“The engineer-type Christian often sees the sermon as the main event. They’ll tolerate the singing, but it’s the doctrine-rich, cross-referenced, bullet-pointed sermon that truly feeds them. Meanwhile, the artist might feel most alive during the music and quietly wish the sermon would get trimmed to fifteen minutes so they can get back to singing.” - 9 Marks
