It strikes me that the technique of training a younger person is exactly what the Biblical imperative of disciple-making is all about: Matthew 28, 1 Timothy 2:2, Exodus 18:13-27, and so on. So well said for that.

One other thing that they hint at, but do not state explicitly, is that beyond just "read widely", we might suggest "Look back at your toughest classes in seminary and see if you can bone up on that.", or "Ask yourself what classes you didn't take, but you should have, and do that."

More or less, if you don't take deliberate action to shore up your weaknesses, you're going to tend to play to either your strengths (less likely) or (more likely) simply cleave to your old habits--which is of course the antithesis of self-improvement in this or any other regard.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
