When I served in the Marine Corps in the 1990s I had many friends who were Marine band members. They rocked hard with Metallica et al back in the day in their off hours. Their day job was John Phillips Souza, but their heart was metal… Fast forward to 2014. I doubt Metallica is as much in vogue, but methinks the problem remains. Is this a problem?

Why would it be a problem for me if the performing artists (the USMC band members) listen to Metallica, Lady Gaga or 50 cent?

If I’m listening to the USMC Marching band, I’m not listening to what they listen to - I’m listening to what they are actually playing.

If your pastor was reading porn does that bother you? If you favorite baseball player is a drug head does affect how much attention you pay? If something like the Marine Corps band is a white washed sepulchre, does that matter? I’m just asking.

Let me clarify that I don’t think it affects the music itself, but it does change whether I want to invest time or money in it.

the band is not your standard issue base band. it’s made up of professional musicians who don’t go to boot camp. They are the only Marines who aren’t riflemen. The music is free for the downloading.

The Air Force band has a nice selection of light classical orchestral and string music.

I don’t really want to get into a long discussion on this, particularly in light of some of our previous exchanges on music, but a pastor that reads porn disqualifies himself from ministry on the basis of I Tim. 3:2, 7. End of story.

I’m a huge Eagles fan, so let’s take DeSean Jackson as a legit example of #2 - I root for the team and the jersey, not the individual. While I LOVED what DJax did on the field, I was never really a big fan of his in particular and was telling people he needed to be traded as early as 2012. I don’t generally root for individuals unless it’s a guy like LeBron James who really has his act together and has demonstrated that publicly (Heat fans may disagree with me on this one ;) ).

It’s the same for the USMC Marching band - I don’t care what people do unless it interferes with their ability to do what they’re paid to do. I don’t think that listening to 50 Cent or Lady Gaga automatically means you can’t play Sousa or Stravinsky or that your ability to play is fatally compromised, and I certainly don’t understand to say that we can only listen to, enjoy, or support people we line up with 90% of the time or better. Take what they do for the quality of their work.

Do you listen to any recordings or attend the live concerts of any secular symphony orchestra or other such music group?

If you don’t, then, listening to the United States Marine Corps Band is moot.

The Marine Band is on the same professional level as the SF Symphony.

was meant to address the notion of “music that checks”. Is there such a thing as music that is ok to listen to irrespective of who the performance is by? Would you listen to Kenneth Copeland (who is a singer btw) sing Amazing Grace? Would you listen to Alice Cooper (who’s father was some kind of preacher I am told) if he put out a CD of your favorite hymns in traditional style? Would you listen to your favorite Bach piece if it was performed by a group of lesbians? Elvis did a lot of gospel songs, are they ok?

I live in “fly over” country, so there are no professional symphonies near me. But, the local university does do a lot of music performance. The conductor of the university symphony is an overt homosexual. I don’t attend.

BTW, reply to Rob, 1MarDiv landed peacefully on Guadalcanal. The early Japanese strategy was not to resist landings, but only later attack after naval support for the invaders had been defeated. This is what happened at Guadalcanal when the night after the landing the Japanese defeated the US naval task force in a night action causing serious US casualties, sinking several destroyers and a cruiser or two. The navy didn’t return for several months leaving the Marines to fend for themselves. They ate mostly stolen Japanese rice for a long time (yummy!) The Japanese strategy changed at Tarawa where the island was turned into a fortress and the landing was fiercely resisted! It was desperate that first day and night on Tarawa.

Okay the title and the 1MarDiv reference were a bits of hyperbole. Actually, they were plays on the usual definition of “music that chaecks”.
