“After nearly a year and a half of discussions concerning a Washington church with lesbian co-pastors, the Southern Baptist Convention has notified the District of Columbia Baptist Convention that ‘the formal relationship between the SBC and the DCBC has come to an end.’” BPNews

“The Fellowship Baptist Church in Sidney, Montana … announced Monday that they plan to withdraw from the [Southern Baptist Convention] ‘due to the ongoing social justice promoting, leftist progressivism, and mission drift away from the Gospel by the denomination’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.’” CP

“The president and CEO of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee has stepped down from his position citing an ‘inappropriate relationship,’ and is retiring from active ministry.” CPost

The Southern Baptist Convention will cut ties with the District of Columbia Baptist Convention unless D.C. Baptist leaders confront a member church with lesbian co-pastors, the SBC Executive Committee warned during Feb. 19-20 meetings in Nashville, Tenn.

Platt added, “I have come to the realization that it is not viable long-term for me to lead as president of the IMB while serving as teaching pastor in a church.” BPress

Land “describes the current struggle over the next leader as a battle between the ‘Billy Graham wing’ of the SBC versus the ‘John Calvin wing.’” OneNewsNow

“The lawsuit also names the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, its president, Paige Patterson, and Houston’s First Baptist Church as defendants, alleging they are liable for their professional, personal or denominational connections with Pressler.” CPost

Here is the problem. The SBC statement admirably denounces every form of racism in general, but specifically denounces only one kind of racism, the kind that has recently come bubbling to the surface in the alt-right movement. What this does is almost completely ignore where the alt-right movement is deriving its energy.

“The decision was met with a standing ovation as about 5,000 members of the denomination voted at their annual convention to affirm their opposition to the alt-right movement, which seeks a whites-only state. But it was not a decision easily reached.” WaPost

The SBC is often called “America’s largest Protestant denomination.” However, in all technicality, we’re a convention not a denomination. The SBC does not have a top-down denominational structure. We’re a collection of ministries supported by a cooperating network of churches. (and 9 more)
