Does the Bible Teach Socialism?

This article conflates the definition of socialism (a communist model), with what most people are improperly promoting with the term socialism. What most people are actually saying when they mean socialism is a type of Nordic model. Which is in direct conflict with the definition in this article because it 1) capitalistic, 2) private property is promoted and 3) it does not lead to communism. What would be a more interesting article is does the Bible align with a Nordic model? There are some elements of it that aligned much better with the Bible than our current republic model. There are definitely cons to it and it is doubtful it will ever fly in the US, becuase it requires a "social contract" which is not a common thought process in the US, and one in which we are rapidly moving away from.

But I’m not sure what you mean by Nordic model. If it’s pro-capitalism and pro-private property, in what sense is it socialism?

I guess I’m not ready yet to give up on the historical sense of socialism as Marx’s idea that society is inexorably advancing to a state where the proletariat controls the means of production, value derives only from labor, and there is no private property.

… which is pretty incompatible with biblical assumptions on those topics and especially with a biblical view of human nature and where value comes from (though it has to be carefully derived. It’s not like there is a verse that rejects Marxism).

I wouldn't say the Nordic Model is socialism, but there is example after example of Democrats in the US holding up the Nordic countries as a shining light of socialism for them (https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/global-opinions/democrats-use-n…)

The Nordic model is actually social democracy. It contains things such as large social safety nets, collective bargaining, typically larger public sector. But when Democrats talk about Universal Healthcare and Socialism, they are always tallking about Norway, Denmark... and not China, Russia....

BTW, conservatives have been making the argument about Norway and Denmark not being socialist for years.

You have two competing cultures at play. You have the more Northern European model that is based on a "social contract" that imposes high trust and the desire to give up something for the common good, with a more US based model which tends to be more distrustful and holds independence over common good. Neither is good or bad in and of themselves, but they do each have good and bad traits around them. I don't see American ever moving toward the Northern European model, because of the deep cultural resistance to it. Some of that cultural resistance is rooted in the core of our founding model. Having lived and spent much time in the Northern European space, it is a very interesting dichotomy.

If Democrats want to sell the idea of Nordic ‘social democracy,’ they should stop calling it ‘socialism,’ and rebrand the idea. Of course, it doesn’t help that many critics on the right knowingly conflate lots of socio-political ideas that are distinct in important ways (and also many unknowingly, though they ought to do their homework).

Still, tip for the social democrats: distance yourself from ‘socialism.’
