We’ll list known problems here in the top post of this thread… feel free to post comments about anything technical.

Known Issues

  • April 14, 2010: after some securities updates to the site, the Front Page and Filings posts are not showing up in Forum lists. We have techs digging into why this is and hope to have it back to normal shortly.
  • Site Data before June 1: all the old articles and forum activity (fixed) are intact and waiting to be made available in some way. We’re discussing w/several folks who have ideas and should have a solution to announce soon. Update: forum archive online. Just working on article databse now.
  • Private Messaging: no folder system yet and tag filtering is pretty iffy I’m told. The PM system is definitely beta so expect improvements over the next few months as the brains at drupal.org refine it.
  • Browseable site member list: knew I forgot something! We’ll get one up soon. Workaround: use the search box (though accounts less than an hour old may not show up yet in searches… indexing, you know). It’s nothing fancy yet, but a browseable member list is available to other members at http://sharperiron.org/memberlist
  • Profile picture: before you can change your profile pic, you have to delete your current one. Would be nice to be able upload a new one and delete the current in one step… or keep several in profile. Also, if you change your profile pic and want to see it in your browser, you’ll probaby have to refresh a few times or even close and reopen your browser (this is not a bug. Caching the pix helps keep things from getting slow)
  • Latest posts/todays posts view: this is missing from Foundry. Plan to return it soon. fixed
  • Latest posts/counts on Forums page: these are not updating as quickly as we’d like. Looking into what needs adjusting…. likewise for “new” indicators.
  • Ladies Only Forum: the subforums there have not been built yet. Soon. fixed
  • Post links in Foundry: if post is on the second page (not on the first page) it takes you to the top of the first page instead of to the post. Status: not fixable short-term. The Foundry does not “know” what page posts are on.
  • Foundry: OP’s (original posts)/ thread-starter posts, don’t show. Should have this fixed soon. fixed
  • Foundry: Most active ever - something is currently wrong w/how posts are counted there. (Schwenke has not posted 153 times!). Tabled for now.
  • FAQ links not showing in Internet Explorer 8 - this is some kind of IE problem. We recommend Firefox. Will be looking for fix for IE eventually. fixed
  • Multiple subscriptions/notifications. Update: this appears to occur when a comment is edited… one notification goes out per edit. One workaround is to set your notifications to go out in bunches ever x period of time rather than “immediate.” What that does is reduce your number of emails, though you’ll still have a line & link for each edit in the emial that goes out. 9/10/09: we now also have a “Save without sending email notification” option as well so you can edit your post without emailing a notif. for each edit you save.
  • Scripture reference popups (Reftagger). Selected translation in Bible Options box not saving. fixed
  • Articles & Filings not showing up in forums - known issue. Do not yet know cause of this, but getting closer.
  • Clicking the Quote link takes you to an uneeded “Reply” page… Since we don’t use threading (where replies to posts are indented and placed directly below the post you’re replying to), there is really no reason for the Quote link to take you to a reply page.

Feature Requests

  • Combined RSS feed for both Filings and front page articles. [done:
  • Ability to disable missiles fired from North Korea… [rejected: (Considering feature that will alow re-aiming, though)
  • Text formatting bar (for bold, italics, etc.)… [maybe: … in the mean time, Greg L. recommends a Firefox plug in: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/128
  • Shinier stars in the forums w/new posts icon. [done:
  • Full Text Feed Content For RSS Feeds - [approved: (Pending ability to get ads into the feeds)

Discussion

Found a tech. who says he’s going to work on it. He was waiting for the “Drupal 7 code freeze” (basically, this is when all the dozens of coders working on Drupal 7 have to finalize their piece of the puzzle… then they do nothing but bug fixing for a while before new release). That was Sep 1.

So anyway, I’m hopeful that we’ll see that remedied soon.

[Barbara H.] I posted a few lines and then a poem which looked fine before I hit “save,” but when it showed up online, everything was shoved into one paragraph. When I clicked “edit,” it looked fine again, but in the actual post it is still run together. The post is here:

Any way to fix it?
This is fixed now. Apparently, the “Text Format Info” selection was changed from allowing Filtered HTML/BBcode to “_” instead. I don’t even know what that last means, but apparently, it disallowed any text formatting.

Dave Barnhart

[Barbara H.] Thank you!
The “Text format info” set up is a bit of corner cutting. The only usable text format for members is “filtered HTML/BBcode,” but all the verbiage about allowed tags and all that displays by default unless there is more than one text format… then it closes into the expandable section. So… just to make it close, we added a useless second format called “-“

It’s temporary. There are better ways to do it.

One of these days it’ll go away and then the occasional accidental switch to format “-” will no longer occur.

Also, update on comment links that don’t go to the right page: there is a “patch” but it’s waiting for time to test. Might not be much longer.

[Angela Stewart] I came in here to say the same thing. I’ve only recently noticed it though - did a setting get flipped somewhere?
I’m actually not real clear on what you’re referring to here. Is the starting point the Forums list or threads lists in particular forums or are we coming from the New Posts page?
The list of posts in each forum isn’t sorted by “most recently replied to.” It used to be, at least on the old SI, that when a person replied to a thread, that thread would bump up to the top of the forum. Now I think the forums are sorted by thread creation date, so they don’t re-order if they get new posts.
Now I know what you mean. Thought we’d fixed that, but I’ll look at it again. There were some problems for a while because front page articles were showing up in the article forum sorted by the date we queued them rather than by the date they went live. So a brand new article would show up three quarters of the way down the page sometimes. So, to correct that, we had them sorting by something like “modified date” for a while. Seems like we fixed the article sort issue though and returned the sort to its default (which is what you’ve described: those w/new posts first).

But maybe not. Will look into it.
Is there any way this could be investigated again? I just clicked through three or four pages of threads looking for the one that had an unread post in it. It would be really nice if the forums could be sorted by the “Last Reply” column rather than the “Created” column. Thanks.

Yes, I’ll do some more digging.

In the meantime, can you click the “Last Reply” header and resort? That should be quicker than going through the pages.

Yes, I suppose I could have done that. By the time I realized the thread was going to be more than a couple pages away, I had found it. ;)

When I first noticed the change, I did re-sort the thread list every time. But it became the equivalent of having to reload the page for each visit, and it grew time consuming and tiresome, so I just dealt with it and scrolled down the lists instead.

It looks like you’ve got it fixed now, though, which I really really appreciate! Thank you! *thumbsup*

Well, it does seem to be working OK.

What I remember now is that we manually changed the sorting because of something else that was broken that was making sorting even worse. But I think the other broken something got fixed. Will have to watch a while and see how it goes.

Okay, here’s what I did:

1. Delete current photo

2. Click save

3. Download different photo

4. Click save

5. Exit browser

6. Return to SI to discover my old profile picture.

What am I doing wrong, please? I want to post my new picture, which highlights all the gray hair I acquired this past year. :) Help?

I thought I was unsuccessful in downloading a new profile pic, but a few minutes later the pic showed up.

I must not be holding my mouth right or something…because a few hours later, there I am in my older….uh, younger? photo. I’ll try again.

I just opened SI in Internet Explorer, and the new photo is there…come back to Firefox (after I had closed it), and it is the old one. This is the closest I’ve come yet to having multiple personalities. :)

Usually I see the reverse… IE hangs on to old stuff and FF refreshes. Either way, hit refresh a couple of times and that should clear it up.

Thanks for the refreshing advice (gotta get my quota of bad puns in before the end of the year). It worked!

I’m sorry if you already addressed this recently…

When I go to “Forums” and then “New Posts”, I see a list of posts made in the last 24 hours, etc. But when I click on a certain post I want to view, usually the most recent post in a thread, it takes me to the first post in the thread instead.

Yep, that’s the old paging problem still. (I think… ) Basically, it can’t calculate what page the post is on if the thread has more than one page, so it goes to the first page.

Still rattling cages on that one. There are three ways to fix it, but all are above my skill level and the guys I know who could do it have their plates full at present. Not giving up though.

Post if you see this happening on short threads. That would probably just be something simple that isn’t configured right.

If I remember correctly, on the old site there was an option for a null vote. This would allow you to see the results of a poll without voting. For example, I have no idea on [URL=http://www.sharperiron.org/forum/poll-what-do-you-believe-about-ezekiel…-] this poll[/URL] , but am curious about where others are. But if I voted just to see the answers it would change the results. And if there are others like me, then it could significantly change the results. Is a null option able to be implimented? (it wasn’t an actual voting option that people added, but an option. I think it came below the voting options.)

Interesting idea. I don’t remember seeing that, but you’re probably right. Will have to look into it. There is probably a module or code snippet or something in Drupal world for doing that.

On the other hand… as a way of drawing people into the forum, it might be better if you have to vote… and just add an “abstain” option. But we do have alot of readers who are not members and they might find the poll results interesting.

Just thinking out loud.

Just for more information. The option, once selected, did not allow you to vote. So it was an either or.
