Known issues
We’ll list known problems here in the top post of this thread… feel free to post comments about anything technical.
Known Issues
- April 14, 2010: after some securities updates to the site, the Front Page and Filings posts are not showing up in Forum lists. We have techs digging into why this is and hope to have it back to normal shortly.
- Site Data before June 1: all the old articles and forum activity (fixed) are intact and waiting to be made available in some way. We’re discussing w/several folks who have ideas and should have a solution to announce soon. Update: forum archive online. Just working on article databse now.
- Private Messaging: no folder system yet and tag filtering is pretty iffy I’m told. The PM system is definitely beta so expect improvements over the next few months as the brains at drupal.org refine it.
- Browseable site member list: knew I forgot something! We’ll get one up soon. Workaround: use the search box (though accounts less than an hour old may not show up yet in searches… indexing, you know). It’s nothing fancy yet, but a browseable member list is available to other members at http://sharperiron.org/memberlist
- Profile picture: before you can change your profile pic, you have to delete your current one. Would be nice to be able upload a new one and delete the current in one step… or keep several in profile. Also, if you change your profile pic and want to see it in your browser, you’ll probaby have to refresh a few times or even close and reopen your browser (this is not a bug. Caching the pix helps keep things from getting slow)
- Latest posts/todays posts view: this is missing from Foundry. Plan to return it soon. fixed
- Latest posts/counts on Forums page: these are not updating as quickly as we’d like. Looking into what needs adjusting…. likewise for “new” indicators.
- Ladies Only Forum: the subforums there have not been built yet. Soon. fixed
- Post links in Foundry: if post is on the second page (not on the first page) it takes you to the top of the first page instead of to the post. Status: not fixable short-term. The Foundry does not “know” what page posts are on.
- Foundry: OP’s (original posts)/ thread-starter posts, don’t show. Should have this fixed soon. fixed
- Foundry: Most active ever - something is currently wrong w/how posts are counted there. (Schwenke has not posted 153 times!). Tabled for now.
- FAQ links not showing in Internet Explorer 8 - this is some kind of IE problem. We recommend Firefox. Will be looking for fix for IE eventually. fixed
- Multiple subscriptions/notifications. Update: this appears to occur when a comment is edited… one notification goes out per edit. One workaround is to set your notifications to go out in bunches ever x period of time rather than “immediate.” What that does is reduce your number of emails, though you’ll still have a line & link for each edit in the emial that goes out. 9/10/09: we now also have a “Save without sending email notification” option as well so you can edit your post without emailing a notif. for each edit you save.
- Scripture reference popups (Reftagger). Selected translation in Bible Options box not saving. fixed
- Articles & Filings not showing up in forums - known issue. Do not yet know cause of this, but getting closer.
- Clicking the Quote link takes you to an uneeded “Reply” page… Since we don’t use threading (where replies to posts are indented and placed directly below the post you’re replying to), there is really no reason for the Quote link to take you to a reply page.
Feature Requests
- Combined RSS feed for both Filings and front page articles. [done:
- Ability to disable missiles fired from North Korea… [rejected: (Considering feature that will alow re-aiming, though)
- Text formatting bar (for bold, italics, etc.)… [maybe: … in the mean time, Greg L. recommends a Firefox plug in: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/128
- Shinier stars in the forums w/new posts icon. [done:
-
Full Text Feed Content For RSS Feeds - [approved: (Pending ability to get ads into the feeds)
[Aaron Blumer] “nrambeck” has updated the Reftagger module, so now your chosen translation should save and stay saved (or should I say “persevere”). And your Bible Options control panel should display the version you have saved.Aaron and NRambeck are my new heroes of the faith!
Note on multiple notifications: I’m pretty confident now also that multiple notif’s usually only go out if a post gets edited. I think that’s not really a bug, it’s a just a feature we don’t especially like. So I’ve put in a feature request to see if we can get either a site-wide switch to turn off edit notifications or a per-user setting so you can get ‘em if you want ‘em.
Not sure which, or either, will be to the the liking of the module developers. Will post when I know more.

This is why two RSS icons appear at the bottom of the Filings block. One is for Filings only and the other is for both Filings & main section articles.

[ChrisC] the foundry is on the blink. all i get is the text “The Foundry” (plus the normal site-wide header and footer). there aren’t any boxes with links to postings or anything.Sorry about that. It’s back up now. Thanks for catching it.

[Greg Long] I have subscribed to the filings and front page feed in Google Reader. However, all I get is the title of each posted filing or article. I do not get any of the text of the articles (unlike other feeds I am subscribed to—when I click on the title of the post, I am able to read the article itself right there in Google Reader).Just a switch set wrong. Should be putting out “teasers” now along w/the titles. Might take an hour to kick in though.

We did some moderating of that thread to keep Alcohol & Scripture discussions in one place. Noted the move in the target thread but forgot to note it in the parent one. Will put a note there.
Edit: Actually, I did note it there. Probably, you were viewing thread while it was in the editing process or had some parts of it still cached in memory. Not sure, but it should be fairly clear there now where the posts were moved.

With that in mind, you can use a bbcode font tag to change the font of any string of text in a forum post.
Like this [font=Courier New] Here’s some courier new text you can only see in that font if you have it installed on your pc[/font]
The tag is…
[ font=whateverfont] text to change[ /font]
(but remove spaces inside the tags)

I am on 10.4 ffx 3.x
I will try Safari when I am home. I have done all the troubleshooting steps including deleting temp files, restart firefox, log back in, restart firefox (or even just close and reopen the tab.). It then prompts me again to log back in.
On my other computer, Ubuntu 9.04 ffx 3.x it works fine as well as on my PC running Chrome.
[Daniel] Any Mac users have issues with persistent logins with Firefox? No issues with persistent logins with Firefox with either MAC OS X Leopard (w Firefox 3.5) or Ubuntu with Firefox 3.

[Greg Long] I’m still getting mixed results from new posts links. When I check the list of new posts and I click on a particular post, sometimes it will take me directly to that post in that thread and other times it just takes me to the beginning of the thread so I have to scroll down to the particular post I wanted to read.Yes, that’s still broken. Turns out it’s bugging alot of Drupal users and a fix has been developed for Drupal 7… but that won’t be out for a few months and we won’t be ready to go there until probably 2011. So work is being done to “backport” some kind of fix for D6.
We may have to throw a little money at it. But stay tuned. This one is annoying enough that we’ll definitely keep working on it.

[Angela Stewart] Quick question: Could links to external sites be set to open in a new tab/window? Most sites are set this way now, and I’m forever forgetting to CTRL-Click when I’m on SharperIron to avoid leaving the site when I want to check out a link.Just thought I’d ask this question again. Is there a way to do this? If there’s a reason to NOT have links open in a new tab/window, that’s fine, but otherwise, I would find it extremely helpful if links would automatically do so.
[Angela Stewart]When developing sites, it still is considered best practice to open links in the same window, internal and external alike. Not everyone likes links opening in new windows, even external links. (I don’t)[Angela Stewart] Quick question: Could links to external sites be set to open in a new tab/window? Also, DTD strict has actually deprecated the target attribute. I would assume the Drupal theme Aaron is using attempts to conform to DTD strict.
My impression is that it’s mostly not considered best practice to do that anymore since modern browsers all have tabs and the user can either middle click or right click and select “new tab.” (Not sure how you do it on Mac though!) I’m by no means an expert on that though.

I can CTRL-click, though. It’s not a BIG deal. :) Like I said, I was just surprised to read that external links are recommended to open in the same tab/window, now that multi-tabbed browsing is virtually standard.
[Angela Stewart] I often click on an external link to look at it later while intending to remain on the site I’m currently browsing.I do the same thing, and sometimes when I finally click on the new tab I forget why I clicked on it in the first place.
May have something to do with age :)

[JohnBrian]I just want to chime in here, this is me, too. :) Like Mr. Brian, I sometimes forget. ;) I much prefer to stay on the page I am reading, then go on to the next page. If all I am doing is visually looking at pictures, with little text, then I might not mind leaving the page or site.[Angela Stewart] I often click on an external link to look at it later while intending to remain on the site I’m currently browsing.I do the same thing, and sometimes when I finally click on the new tab I forget why I clicked on it in the first place.

There are still many people who have slow dial up connections and it’s so much better for them to not have to leave the page they are on. Although, if they already deal with this, they probably are already know to go the extra steps.

In Dr. Bauder’s article today, we added a couple of external links and went ahead and gave them the ‘new window’ target setting… but as the site is right now, that has to be done manually.

Warning - This involves editing your Firefox pref.js file and can hose your Firefox install if you aren’t careful. I recommend you back up your prefs. info first - instructions are available at the above link.

3: Open Javascript popups as tabs
If a popup window lacks the features of a browser window, Firefox will handle it like a popup. If you would prefer to open all windows, including popups, as new tabs, you need to tell Firefox in about:config. Search for newwindow and you will see three entries. Of those three entries, you will want to modify:
browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction: Change this to 0.

[Matt H.] I was wondering if signatures could be turned on in opening threads?Matt, that would be great. Right now, though, if we turn that on, it also displays the signature line on front page articles, which doesn’t work well w/the format of those posts. This is fixable though. It’ll just take a while to figure out how to do it.

For me, it would be more useful to have a column marked “Modified” rather than “Created” when going to a forum via the “new posts” link. Maybe clicking on the forum itself would give the “Created” dates. Or maybe both columns could be included and the user could sort on either.
Just a thought for the future.
EDIT: never mind — I just realized I can use the “Last Reply” column to sort correctly. DUH. Still, it would be nice to have the most recently replied threads automatically sort to the top first.

[Jay C] Is there any way to print an entire thread for reading later? I tried to print the entire thread for the http://sharperiron.org/forum/thread-church-websites] discussion on church websites , but all that came up in the print edition was the first post. I’m sure I’m probably missing something easy, but can’t find it. I prefer the print edition layout because it’s easier on the eyes and probably not as ink-demanding.At the moment, there isn’t a really good way to do that… well, there could be. The situation is that the printing module has a system-wide toggle switch to either include comments or not include them. It doesn’t give the would-be printer any choice. So I went w/not including, for the benefit of folks who might want to put a copy of an article out on their church lobby table or something… without all the discussion.
The ideal would be a link for print all and a link for print article only. But how to do that is not yet apparent. In the old SI, we didn’t have this problem because the article was completely separate post and the forum thread was only connected by a link.
So, what do you think… is it better to include comments system wide and let folks who don’t want them printed omit them by limiting the page numbers they print? That doesn’t work really well either because there is currently no page break between the end of the article/thread-starter and the beginning of the comments (but getting one in there might not actually be too hard to do).

[Angela Stewart] I came in here to say the same thing. I’ve only recently noticed it though - did a setting get flipped somewhere?I’m actually not real clear on what you’re referring to here. Is the starting point the Forums list or threads lists in particular forums or are we coming from the New Posts page?

[Aaron Blumer]The list of posts in each forum isn’t sorted by “most recently replied to.” It used to be, at least on the old SI, that when a person replied to a thread, that thread would bump up to the top of the forum. Now I think the forums are sorted by thread creation date, so they don’t re-order if they get new posts.[Angela Stewart] I came in here to say the same thing. [Angela Stewart]Now I know what you mean. Thought we’d fixed that, but I’ll look at it again. There were some problems for a while because front page articles were showing up in the article forum sorted by the date we queued them rather than by the date they went live. So a brand new article would show up three quarters of the way down the page sometimes. So, to correct that, we had them sorting by something like “modified date” for a while. Seems like we fixed the article sort issue though and returned the sort to its default (which is what you’ve described: those w/new posts first).[Aaron Blumer]The list of posts in each forum isn’t sorted by “most recently replied to.” It used to be, at least on the old SI, that when a person replied to a thread, that thread would bump up to the top of the forum.
