MacArthur's First Message at Shepherd's Conference 2011

John MacArthur
Mark 11:12-17

Introduction:

  • A monumental, profound day in redemptive history, Tuesday of Passion Week

  • Saturday, he had stopped in Bethany to visit with his friends Mary, Martha, and recently-resurrected Lazarus

  • Best understanding is that Jesus remained in Bethany Sunday and crowds came to see him there and to see Lazarus, an immense curiosity

Street Preaching Methods

I have been having thoughts on trying to balance out my street preaching style and method. Currently my method models that of the old fashioned Fundamentalist. However Ray Comfort of Way of the Master and his followers have challenged me a little. Ray Comfort adapts a teaching/preaching approach where he uses signs, bill boards, passes out money, and uses other tactics to get the crowds attention and to speak on their level. I have noticed that people are far more responsive to this method of street preaching, verses the old fashioned evangelistic style.

Hymnal Choices

Our church is considering changing the hymnal it uses. We currently use Great Hymns of the Faith. We love this hymnal, but would at least like to consider some options. We are considering switching to Majesty Hymns. As far as we know, that hymnal best reflects the doctrine/tradition of our church.

Mysticism Infiltrating the Church(es) ....

Many churches are under attack from the enemy, with counterfeit revivals, demonic manifestations, occult practices, Mysticism, New Age …

How could so many church leaders be easily misled, and continue to add to the deception, leading many people, even Christians into the world of Mysticism ….

Has anyone had experience with Mysticism?

What exactly is wrong with Mysticism?

Survey on the Public Preaching of the Song of Songs

Please visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZKMPSZ3 for a brief survey on preaching the Song of Songs literally in a congregational setting.

I am in the dissertation writing stage at BJU of a primer to aid pastors in the public preaching of the Song and would appreciate any input the SharperIron community can provide. If the response is sufficient, I will post the results. Also, any other shared insights relating to the Song in ministry would also be greatly appreciated.

The Intentional Ugliness of Separation

eyeLately, some fresh thinking has been going on in the area of biblical separation (especially “ecclesiastical separation”). A much-needed rethinking has begun, and I, for one, am glad to see it.

Are mission boards Biblical?

Well no….I don’t believe so…They are taking place of the local church.

Mission Boards Generic Philosophies:

They typically are arranged to provide accountability financially and doctrinally?

They are there to help with the legalities of starting a mission work or church plant?

And to communicate with the sending and supporting local churches!

Truthfully these generic philosophies confuse me! Why can’t the Local church do this. Acts 11, 13, 14 depicts all of these issues. The Local church in those passages takes care of all those issues?
