One of the Bible’s greatest heroes practically raped a woman, impregnated her, then had her husband killed. And God wrote it all up in the Bible! How’s that for reality TV?
[Mark_Smith]What if the cops don’t think much happened… they don’t pursue. Then 10 years later, you are called on the carpet because you didn’t MAKE the police arrest the kid. Sound familiar?
I think God calls us to work with the authorities per Romans 13, even though we know they don’t always do right. The bet is that if they get it right a certain percentage of the time, those who would commit crimes are intimidated into stopping. And yes, like sausage or law, the results aren’t always pretty for us. But God commands it.

- God did not excuse David for his sin
- Great judgment came upon his house

Exactly, and as a result an innocent child lost his life directly related to his sin. So yes sin is very bad.
Some of the questions you guys ask is really disturbing.
If someone in the youth group was caught fondling the genitalia of a younger child and it was reported to me, would I call the police. Ohhh Yessss!
The other concern I have with the questions is how on earth can a 5 year old, coerced by her parents to accept the forgiveness of her older brother fondling her and then continue to live with that abuser, be considered genuine forgiveness and solution of the problem. Are you guys crazy? I don’t care how much hormones play a part, there is significantly something wrong about touching your 5 year old little sister in that way.
I am not calling for being quartered. I am just disturbed with how this was handled. Very disturbed.
I know NOTHING about Gothard. Nothing. I am not defending him at all.
I am opposed to people who blast a man for something that happened 14 years ago that they know NOTHING about.
I also oppose lumping everyone into one batch, and say we will call the cops for everything with no common sense.
And by the way, calling the police is no shield. In the Tina Anderson case the police were called and they failed to follow up. How many people still blame Chuck Phelps for that?
Can you say that Duggars excused Josh’s sin? They dealt with it in their way. He was open about it with his girlfriend and her family before they were engaged also.
Joe, I don’t think Mark is defending Gothard or Duggar at all. He is simply questioning whether the furor over Josh Duggar’s confessed sins matches what the sins actually are, and to what degree society ought to have punished him. He is also asking in general whether we may be overreacting to sexual sin among adolescents and younger children. He may be right, he may be wrong, but that is what he is doing. Let’s engage the actual argument, OK?
Now to answer that argument, I don’t know enough—I have heard horror stories, however, about how six year old boys have been all but declared sex offenders because they playfully touched or kissed a little girl in kindergarten. So some of these anecdotes suggest we ought to ask the questions Mark appears to be asking. Over-reaction is a very real possibility.
In this case, my view is that he knew what he was doing and probably should have been punished as a juvenile, but not as an adult unless there were some aggravating circumstances.

Practically raped? Let’s tone down the drama there buddy. Nothing in the text indicates that she was raped. Maybe bathing naked in view of the palace wasn’t the best idea.
1 Kings 8:60 - so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other.
In these stories, it is difficult to actually comment without those lusting for red meat to not tear you apart. This has been as much an opportunity to bash other groups as anything else.
Is it really the belief of some of you that if you have committed a particular sin in your life, you may never, even after being saved, speak on the evil of that sin? If so, you must think Paul was out of his mind crazy.
It has also given people a platform to bash having too many kids (maybe give us a number for how many is enough).
It has also given people a platform to bash the rest of the Duggars over this.
I am not trying to defend anyone, but many of you have bloody meat still in your mouth and are snarling at anything that moves.

My post is not about the Duggars, abuse, etc.
I love to watch magicians. I try to keep my eyes on the hand they don’t want me watching.
Why is this story hitting the media now? Do you honestly think this wasn’t dropped in the media by Oprah to become the second leading story on the Today show because people want to know about what a 14 year old did over a decade ago? Nothing will distract the religious community and general public more right now than a child abuse case with a high profile Christian.
The Friday document dump was all about another high profile “Christian” family from Arkansas, Hillary Clinton. And no one, except Fox News is talking about it. Wag the Dog
Another revealing thing from this is the secular world’s view of Christian forgiveness. I beg you to go to the Bible to find God’s prescribed pattern for forgiveness. Don’t just take secular psychology’s theory of the day.
At this very moment on the Wall Street Journal the Hillary Benghazi emails are top left.
The Duggar thing is front and center for these reasons:
- The family is very public (this is an understatement). Your family doesn’t have a website like this! Nor a TV show.
- Josh worked (until dismissed) for the conservative Family Research Council (link above in this thread)
- Today (or yesterday) that which was hidden became unhidden.
Anyone who takes a very strong position about something and then the bubble bursts and the public persona does not match the private persona is at risk. It’s called integrity - or in this case, lack of. There was another case like this this week … Anti-gay Michigan pastor resigns after being caught chatting on Grindr
The Duggars are Christians and as Christians we all face the same risk. We say we believe one thing and when our lives do not reflect that the world mocks us!
Duggar news missing on front page altogether
Explain how they were acting contrary to Christianity Jim. If Josh was at present a molester then you have a point. You are of the belief it seems that a sin committed prior to salvation could never be spoken against?

- 1st I did make a comment about family size. But it really was not primarily about the size of one’s family but rather the responsibility to oversee a family. I can tell you that my wife and I provided separate sleeping quarters for our daughter from my sons. Not that I didn’t trust my sons … but that our daughter deserved her privacy.
- 2nd. : While Josh’s sins were a decade ago, his leadership in the FRC was in the present
Finally (and I did point this out above and not for the first time on S/I … ) Gothardism is severely flawed and the Duggars followship of him is likewise.
