Historian Jon Meacham pulled from Samford event over Planned Parenthood ties
“…the private Christian university pulled Meacham’s lecture after a student created an online petition and a resolution was passed by the Student Government Association, both calling for his removal.” - BPNews
I can’t quite see this as a win. Though this univ. probably should have vetted Meacham better before inviting him, his thing is presidential biography. And should conservatives join the cancel culture? If our ideas are better, let’s debate.
A better tack would have been to issue a public statement that the univ. has a strong history of standing for life (assuming it does!), and it does not endorse all views of all of its guest speakers… and they’re invited for their achievements in specific areas of expertise. Or something like that. Then just go ahead with it.
Of course, then they’d have to deal with the ensuing protests at the event. So there’s that. It’s not an easy call, but I can’t really feel like “hurray, we really stood up for life” on this one.
Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.
If he was a theologian/pastor I could see it since his life would then be inconsistent with his calling. I enjoyed his biography on Jefferson.
Apparently he spoke at a PP luncheon. What did he say? To me speaking there isn’t a clear “tie” to PP. Maybe he explained to them that abortion is murder and that’s why many Americans are against it.
