Multisite Ministry Gone Wrong?

“Fellowship Church in Grapevine has thousands of members on five campuses. Young says his church and travels have allowed him to minister to more than a quarter of a million people.” Young is facing increasing suspicion over his use of the church’s leased jet.

Discussion

it seems like young is acknowledging that there are personal trips he takes with the plane(s) paid for by the church(es) that are later reimbursed and that this process is overseen by “teams of accountants”. so far there is no real evidence to contradict this account.

if young continues to properly pay for all personal trips and the church agrees that there is a ministry-related need for having plane(s), i don’t see what the problem could be. maybe some congregants want greater transparency, but that’s another topic.

When a minister becomes a celebrity, the closest most of his congregants will ever get to him is to get up close to his face on some screen somewhere. The celebrity status and lifestyle creates more money and temptations than any person can handle. Jesus Christ, when he was at the height of his popularity, never lived the way that our world’s celebrity ministers live, yet no one considers that. 2 Timothy 4:3 says, “For the time is coming when will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions.” So, unfortunately, Young will not be the last of celebrity ministers with expensive jets and millions to spend on their houses and lands, all in the name of the kingdom.

It irks me when a minister justifies his lavish lifestyle (private jets) by all the demands on him to travel here and there to reach people with the gospel. Since when does getting the gospel out to hundreds of thousands of people rest largely on the shoulders of one man? Also, I am in MUCH less demand that Ed Young, yet I hardly have time to take the personal time off that Young’s FAA travel log shows he has taken to go fishing. Seems like he is living the lifestyle of the Rich and Famous.

Don’t forget that there is absolutely nothing wrong with having expensive jets and millions to spend on houses and lands. There also isn’t anything wrong with having a less demanding schedule than other pastors and nothing wrong with going on a fishing trip no matter how lavish. I know nothing about this man or his ministries, but it also appears that we do not know whether he did anything wrong or not. By his own testimony, he says he hasn’t. He may be guilty as can be, but it seems we’ve condemned him because he has more money than most of the rest of us. Personally, I wish my pastor made enough to take fishing trips in Cabo.

BTW, what possible good does posting this story do for any of us??
