CDC: Suicide rate for kids ages 10 to 14 nearly tripled in last decade
“According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, the suicide rate among 10 through 24-year-olds has increased 56 percent over the last decade as violent deaths (suicide and homicide) continue to be leading causes of death for that age bracket.” - Christian Post

Pretty sad. It would be interesting to see what factors might link to suicide—poverty, crime, ethnicity/race, family status, etc.. We’ve got a strong movement around here to remove bullying as a factor, and there is at least anecdotal evidence that it’s for real. My wife has talked to one of the bereaved fathers.
One other possible factor is hopelessness—about the same period shows a huge rise in opioid deaths as well, many of which I suspect (but cannot prove) might be quiet suicides. So one has to wonder whether one factor is that a child does not do well when dad/mom “goes to sleep” with blue lips. That in turn implicates family breakdown, reduction in blue collar jobs, consequences of overweight/back trouble, etc..
Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
