CDC: Suicide rate for kids ages 10 to 14 nearly tripled in last decade

"According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, the suicide rate among 10 through 24-year-olds has increased 56 percent over the last decade as violent deaths (suicide and homicide) continue to be leading causes of death for that age bracket." - Christian Post

Pretty sad.  It would be interesting to see what factors might link to suicide--poverty, crime, ethnicity/race, family status, etc..  We've got a strong movement around here to remove bullying as a factor, and there is at least anecdotal evidence that it's for real.  My wife has talked to one of the bereaved fathers.

One other possible factor is hopelessness--about the same period shows a huge rise in opioid deaths as well, many of which I suspect (but cannot prove) might be quiet suicides.  So one has to wonder whether one factor is that a child does not do well when dad/mom "goes to sleep" with blue lips.  That in turn implicates family breakdown, reduction in blue collar jobs, consequences of overweight/back trouble, etc..

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
