Patriotism and the Church: Is It Too Much to Ask Churches to Be Careful?

Church I helped lead worship in last Sunday: we referenced America in prayer, and "independence day" was a springboard for a sermon on Jesus' liberation of the Gadarene demoniac. The focus of the gathering was the grace of God. No flag on the platform (there is one in the lobby), no patriotic songs.

It was a joy to be part of a gathering that put first things first and fourth or fifth things fourth or fifth.

Also missing: dire pronouncements about loss of freedom, the leadership in Washington, etc. That was a huge blessing also. Nations come and nations go. Our God is forever, and His gracious plan to redeem those who believe for His glory is forever also. We gather to rejoice in that and be challenged and convicted by that.

I'm all for applying Scripture to our cultural moment, but we have so much focus on political fights these days that we tend to lose all the context. And for Christians, the context is what matters most.

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

Aaron on this topic you keep hitting home runs. However you better be careful a Trumper might try to slap a Liberal sticker on you.  They already slapped one on Ed Stetzer even though all of Ed's criticism of Trump came true. Funny all the Victims/Advocates community echoed the same concerns about Christian Nationalism and that group was the biggest offenders against them.  Birds of a feather flock together.

In yesterday's service at the church I grew up in the pastor expressed his great displeasure with an article saying that US flags should not be in churches. He handed out flags for every person in the church including even the children in the nursery and then they sang patriotic songs while waving the flags. This was followed by a video on Francis Scott Key and a patriotic sermon. There is usually a large cross at the front of the auditorium, but yesterday it was covered up with an even larger American flag.

The suggestion that this could be idolatry goes right over their heads. It's super disappointing to me as I still have many family and friends there.

I'm only against Christian Nationalism when it manifested itself in an outright revolt and attempt to overthrow my Government and maimed for life 60 of my Federal Law Enforcement Brothers and Sisters for life.  They can wave the flags all they want and cheer on Trump all they want as long as it is not connected to an effort to install Trump as their Mullah of a Christian Caliphate.

That is what is going on even at Bible Colleges. Trump and his Pastors and fellow Republicans are still stoking an armed rebellion.  That makes them Traitors if they are still supporting Trump.  That type of behavior needs to be put down by Law Enforcement and the National Guard with overwhelming fire power if they show up with guns next time.

That's what is going on here.  Trump is now being cornered legally.  All his crap of being persecuted by the left is crap. Trump's business if convicted ends his business empire.  The more Trump and his minions like Rudy and Matt Gatez get cornered the more stoking they will do.  Trump wants to see another attack and I believe it will happen and these churches like the one above will support it.

I sure hope I'm wrong but few believers are standing up against this. Adam Kinzinger is one of them and Liz Channey is another.  The sin right now is on the Christian Right side.  The poor State Senator in MI and Rafensberger are putting up with these threats of violence and no Evangelicals in numbers are pushing back.

Any so-called believer backing Trump now is in SIN period. I say that to all on Sharper Iron.  If your still backing Trump you are in sin.  If Trump runs again write in Donald Duck if you can't vote for BIDEN.  Anyone backing a Congressman or Congresswomen still on the Trump train you are in sin.  Hopefully Trump will be in jail but Trump is like an Eel.  The more you try to grab him the more slime he puts out.  God help our Country that's all I can say.
