Actually, these are conservative ideas. (And strangely at odds w/Wallis’ history of government policy advocacy)

I think almost all Americans could affirm the importance of personal responsibility and taking care of each other, whether conservative or progressive. The question is more how we go about emphasizing personal responsibility and taking care of each other. Jim Wallis has a lot of faith that the government is the main solution for work, family, and education. I am more pessimistic of a bigger government’s role.

True… and the idea that poverty can actually “cured” at all is not really a conservative perspective. But mitigated—certainly. I really am surprised (though I shouldn’t be by now) how much I see every day that the concept of community and society is being assumed to be the same thing as the concept of government.
