"If you think about it those are not liberal or conservative ideas"
Actually, these are conservative ideas. (And strangely at odds w/Wallis’ history of government policy advocacy)
Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.
I think almost all Americans could affirm the importance of personal responsibility and taking care of each other, whether conservative or progressive. The question is more how we go about emphasizing personal responsibility and taking care of each other. Jim Wallis has a lot of faith that the government is the main solution for work, family, and education. I am more pessimistic of a bigger government’s role.
True… and the idea that poverty can actually “cured” at all is not really a conservative perspective. But mitigated—certainly. I really am surprised (though I shouldn’t be by now) how much I see every day that the concept of community and society is being assumed to be the same thing as the concept of government.

Aaron,
I agree that we are being much too optimistic that somehow poverty can be eliminated. I also wrote about this very subject on my blog. Here are a couple articles that might interest you.

Sorry about that. We just recreated our ministry’s (UTM’s) website and we’ve had trouble transferring the blog. Looks like we may have to cut and paste past blog posts. Should have it ready within the next four or five days. I will resend the links on this post when ready.
Yes, I know a little about website update headaches ;) Thanks for the update.

Aaron,
Here are the links to a few articles on poverty that I wrote about how America’s War on Poverty was too ambitious……
