I could chalk up both to colossal ignorance, but it does actually turn out that alcohol is physically addictive in a way marijuana is not, so in a manner of speaking, that part is at least plausible. One big problem with the hypothesis of deliberate ignorance, however, is that I rarely remember getting much past the second World War in history class in high school, if that far. So we might argue that it's a methodological problem with instruction.
