Some good points, but I think there’s a better way to answer that question.

  • Christian living is a calling to be something and do things, not to achieve certain results. It sounds cliche, but the life is about the journey.
  • NT passages call us directly to do our work as for the Lord and not merely for men
  • When we use our God-like (“imago dei”) talents and gifts to better the world around us, we’re picturing God’s character, His glory.
  • Judgment passages are clear that what we do here and now, brief though it is, matters forever.
  • Even the fleeting nature of our work expresses the results of sin on the world and emphasizes the need for the creation’s “deliverance from the bondage of corruption” (Rom. 8:21). It’s a reminder of our hope (8:23-24).
  • The quality of our work (not just the abilities we use) is also a picture of the character of God. He doesn’t do sloppy, lazy, barely-adequate work Himself. Neither should we.
