Jordan Peterson wrestles with God

“In a new lecture tour to support a forthcoming book, the psychologist and public intellectual hews ever closer to Christianity, tantalizing fans who take their cues on converting from his secular but religiously curious thought.” - RNS

I don't think I have ever listened to one of his complete lectures, but I have watched some of his short clips. I was recently reading Ecclesiastes and I could almost hear his voice in the background. He has a lot of insights into life that "seem" quite intelligent, but he is missing the most important part- man's reconciliation to God and man's role in glorifying God. Yet, as I listen to him, he seems to be close to recognizing this glaring gap in his thought process. I pray he comes to the savior so that he does not think that life is nothing more than vanity because without reconciling to God and finding our purpose in glorifying God, life really is empty.

I have heard that he is coming to our area and part of me wants to go for the same reason Paul went to Mar's Hill. The other part of me is uncomfortable lending any credibility to someone who is promoting the idea of God without a Biblical definition of who God really is. I want to engage with those who hear Peterson and declare unto them the "unknown God." But I do not want to endorse Peterson's pseudo religious approach to God. I think we can still do that just by having conversations with our unsaved friends who may be interested in what Peterson has to say. Therefore, I think it is wise to hear his arguments without endorsing them. At this point, my plan is not to endorse nor to condemn him in my conversations, but rather to use any interest people have in him to point those people toward Biblical truth. I believe that was the point of Paul's Mar's Hill interaction. If this morphs into Peterson promoting himself as the key, then we have a whole new problem and that will then require a different approach.

Watch out for your hip, Jordan!

Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, no surprise that someone who doesn't yet claim Christ doesn't talk like a mature believer. Lord willing, that will come for Jordan, just as it did for Jacob. I'm glad for the progress he's made.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
