Christian flag controversy engulfs small Georgia town

“The controversy began early last month, when the Cochran City Council voted against the advice of its attorney to fly the flag at city hall to help promote a local Bible-reading marathon sponsored by the International Bible Reading Association.” Flag Controversy

Discussion

Why on earth does Christianity need a flag? Anyone ever thought about this? It appears to be an American (& Canadian?) thing; my Australian Christian friends are thoroughly confused when I’ve mentioned it.

I even remember the pledge we used to recite - I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose Kingdom it stands. One Savior, crucified, risen, and coming again with life and liberty to all who believe.

I’ve grown increasingly uncomfortable with pledging religious allegiance to an object alongside our Savior. Also, would dispensationalists have quibble with the “kingdom” language?

I’ve thought that there are too many pledges in conservative Christendom. My children used to have to pledge to the Awana flag during club time, and I did not like that at all. Too much pledging weakens the entire concept.

Try taking the American flag off your church platform and watch what happens.

I’ve been to many, many Chinese and Indonesian churches. Can’t recall ever seeing a Chinese or Indonesian flag on the platform.

Like Kevin Miller above, I grew up reciting the pledge to it at my IFB Christian school. (I don’t know if that is still done at the school today.)

Frankly I am shocked that so many fundamentalists from yesteryear had no problem embracing the pledge to the Christian flag, especially with its National Council of Churches interfaith origins.

Really? I have never heard of a fight over this but would not be surprised. I do know that it is well known among Christian musicians that do concerts in certain genres that if you want to get a congregation on their feet and excited, throw in a patriotic song.
