Fun Friday - Why Beards are Awesome

I love my beard. Why do some fundamentalists look down upon them?

I haven’t been clean shaven (even for a day) since graduation from college in 1985, and absent some medical reason, I’m never going to. Beards *are* awesome.

Charles Spurgeon, “Growing a beard ‘is a habit most natural, scriptural, manly, and beneficial.’”

Some fundamentalists don’t like beards because (like denim) they were a “sign of rebellion” in the 1960’s and 70’s.

Personally I like having one but my wife doesn’t like kissing one so I shave.

While in college, I remember being given demerits for not shaving & constantly being ragged on for being “poorly groomed.”

“Sir, did you shave this morning?”

“Why, no I didn’t, Mr. Hall Monitor.”

“Why not?”

“It’s not a school day”, I replied. It was a Saturday, but to be honest, I hadn’t shaved since Wednesday…

“While you’re here, every day is a school day”, was the curt response - plus the gift of 5 demerits.

Ahh - the memories…

I don’t understand why a cultural sign of rebellion against God would be to let happen what God designed to happen. Someone in the 1950s didn’t have their thinking cap on when they decided beards were rebellious. Yay beards.

I think it’s pretty clear that “Nature itself teaches us” that a man was intended to grow facial hair.

I was there and I didn’t understand it. We laugh now, but at the time men’s hair that touched the ears or collar was seen as rebellion as were flared, bell bottom or pegged pants, any jewelry other than wedding rings, blue (but not black) denim jeans, and wire-rimmed glasses. I remember two Lebanese students who were allowed to have the middle eastern “stubble” look because shaving close created problems with those who had sensitive skin and tough beards. The peer pressure on those men was palpable.

If it was good enough for Jesus it’s good enough for me!

On a not quite parallel note, I’m glad my wife shaves her legs.

But yes, since it’s almost time to go to the prairie remnants of NW Ohio and, er, “collect” rabbits and pheasants, yay beards.
