Jack Schaap sentencing postponed to March 20th

Isn’t that Pastor’s School week in Hammond? Hilarious irony.

Matthew

I don’t think they are having one, but if they were it would be typically the 3rd week of March. Unfortunately I’ve been to more than a few way back when.

Best news I’ve heard yet today. I grew up under the Hyles regime from 1975 to 1996. My grandparents started attending the gulag in 1962 or so when Jack Sr had been in Hammond for 3 years.

I attended a Pastors’ School in 1975. I can honestly say it was one of the major turning points in my life. I went with a favorable view of Jack Hyles, and a desire to learn better how to emulate him. I came home with a determination to find a different style of ministry. At that time, I didn’t know what it would be, but I knew what it would not be. I could never again follow the Hyles model of ministry.

I was at the ‘78 Pastors’ school - The one where Hyles gave John R Rice’s horse, MacArthur, an honorary Doctorate. Upon receipt, the horse defecated filling the arena with the smell of horse manure.

It was a life-changing event!

Jim, Please tell me you are kidding about John R. Rice’s horse. PLEASE tell me it’s a bad joke!!!

No kidding. I was there. Can’t find much on the web about it but here’s one link

He also decided that Mrs. Riplinger should be elevated to “Doctor;” and since he had years ago given a similar “degree” to Dr. Rice’s horse, named MacArthur, I suppose Hyles figured that if a horse deserved such a degree, it would not be below his standards to give one to Mrs. Riplinger.

Why does my mind turn to the 1970s when Jack Hyles awarded an honorary doctorate to John Rice’s horse. I understand that the horse deficated right on the stage, and those that followed had to watch where they stepped. A Maranatha music faculty member also received an honorary doctorate right after the horse. He joked about it, but down deep I think that he believed that it cheapened the award.

A few years ago I flirted (can’t think of a better word) with the IFBs and attended a bus convention in Lexington KY. Thought I’d learn something. Boy, did I ever learn! “Dr.” Gail Replinger gave a presentation on the KJV with the absolute worst PowerPoint presentation I’ve ever seen. Her slides were so crammed with information that they were all but unreadable. She said some rather outrageous things about other denominations, including my Brethren group “because they have deaconesses.” Two hours of this madness was all I could take, and when the break came, I quietly packed my computer into the bag, slung it over my shoulder, walked out of the building, and then called my wife to tell her I was coming back home. That cured me of IFB.

Several other things I remember about Pastors’ School 1978:

  1. It was very well organized.
  2. It was long, exhausting days.
  3. They had a mentally handicapped choir that was phenomenal
  4. Jack rebuked Pastors with “long hair” and provided free haircuts
  5. The testimony of the “Phoster Club” ladies. My own pastor turned to me and whispered sarcastically “they put the Apostle Paul to shame” (A woman testified that she had won some huge number of people to Christ that week! (I’ve been a Christian for 40 years … I still have not caught up with her record)
  6. They were giving away a brand new Camaro that week to the bus captain who won some sort of contest (forgot the details .. but it really impressed me because I would have loved a Camaro)
  7. We (my Pastor and his wife and I) all stayed in Hobart at a Pastor’s home. As I recall it was Pastor Carl LaTurco’s home.

Summary: We worshipped his success. I fell for it for a while.

Update: The horse event was not in the church auditorium … it was at a local large arena. On a Thursday night

I believe it was the Hammond Civic Center just down the road where Rice’s horse received his degree and took a dump on the stage. I witnessed Jack Sr taking a dump on the sanctuary stage for a couple decades. Would have been more edified with horse crap.

It all depends on your definitions. If “IFB” means “people who agree with Gail Riplinger’s views,” makes perfect sense. But neither Independent nor Fundamental—and certainly not Baptist—have anything to do with any flavor of KJVO.

Yeah, “IFB” may well be an irredeemable term at this point, but… still bugs me when wholes come to be defined by subsets.

Matthew… what you’re saying might be true—in a manner of speaking—but it’s not the sort of thing we want to see posted here. It’s more edifying to talk about why this or that is wrong or unhelpful—and if that’s already obvious, it might not be worth talking about at all.

(With that, I think I’ll return to not reading threads about anything related to Hammond.)

Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

Understand what you mean by “subsets.” Good terminology. And with this I (and hopefully we) will end the discussion.
