First Baptist Church spokesman says no charges expected against Schaap

There you go. No criminal charges means he didn’t really do anything th-a-a-a-a-t bad, right? I predict he’ll be pastoring somewhere again within a year.

Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?

Terry Duff, chairman of the Board of Deacons, said the church is committed to finding out the total truth.

He said he spoke with Schaap about the incident on Saturday afternoon and that all information has been turned over to law enforcement conducting the investigation.

“No wrongdoing will be covered up,” Duff said on Wednesday in front of the church’s administrative offices. “The minute we found out about this, we responded”…We are committed to finding out the total truth,” Duff said. “We are going to do what is right no matter what the cost or consequences to First Baptist Church.”

I don’t know Mr. Duff from Adam, but I am glad that he seems to be up to the task of attacking this issue so strongly and forcefully. I hope that God will give him the strength and understanding to guide the Deacons and (indirectly) the church into a better understanding than the man muddled mess that had characterized FBC Hammond in the past. This little bit of the story gives me hope that things will change for the better in Hammond, and I would love to see that happen.

I had the same thoughts except I was wondering how long it would be before he is back pastoring First Baptist in Hammond, IN. It didn’t take Bill Gothard long at all to return to his ministry after he resigned over inappropriate relations with females. Though they are different ministries they both are very controlling and are idolized by their followers. There are already those who are defending Schaap and saying that this cannot possibly be true. I just hope he does not pull a Gothard and have the deacons that want to hold him accountable removed and replaced.

The buzz on Facebook is that the church didn’t report it to authorities, Jocelyn Zichterman did. And also that Schaap might be in custody right now.

I cannot verify any of that, so we’ll see.

I’m pretty sure that if Schaap were in custody that the NWI times would be reporting it … and they aren’t (just checked)

Yea, that part seemed far-fetched. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. I sure hope the church reported it to the authorities, like they are saying they did.

Anyway we all need to wait and see…. And pray.

Is this called gossip? Just wondering.

Bob,

I’m sorry, but I can’t believe you posted anything about JZ reported this to the authorities. I believe SHE would claim that it was SHE who did it, but every story on the web from reputable news outlets state no such thing.

Chip & JD, really???

You don’t believe this could/has happened in these circles? Just look back as far as David Hyles.

Why is it that my voice always seems to be loudest when I am saying the dumbest things?

I usually swat it.

The age of consent thing is a problem, IMO, when one is talking about a person in a position of authority using that to influence an immature and impressionable young person into sex.

Lee: No, it’s not gossip if it’s in an online forum such as this where we are just seeking to “get to the bottom of things.” We need not verify things, for we have a responsibility to pass along all information that we receive so that others might “take note.” I hope that sheds some clarity on your concern. I know that there is some gossip “exception clause” as per online forums in the NT, I just can’t for the life of me remember where it is.

I’m confused on what you are trying to say? What does, “in the NT” mean? I think we should hold to scripture, not exception clauses. It’s one thing to postulate and give one’s opinion of what may happen, but to pass along information from suspect sources is dangerously close if not over the “gossip” line.

I wasn’t intending to gossip. Sorry if that is what this was. I was just trying to hunt down the news-factor. I want to believe that FBCH reported it to the authorities. I found it odd that JZ said she did. I don’t follow her, I just happened to see that somewhere. The fact that news media are backing FBCH’s story is a good sign that JZ is wrong.

The custody thing was totally wrong, I think there was an online story about Hammond having some criminal in custody on the NW IN Times website and someone mistook that, or something.

I was just wondering if the news that was being shared on the filing item that started this particular thread was premature, that’s all.

I think if you pry open his mouth you will see his tongue safely tucked away into his cheek. :)
