The cows left the barn years ago. Zuckerberg admitting that he cooperated with the White House in suppressing free speech is about 3 years too late.
Ironically, some of us were told that it wasn't a free speech issue, since the social media companies aren't the government. Turns our we were right and our detractors wrong, but I doubt anything meaningful will happen as a result. The damage has already been done and there's no going back.
There has been a big shift in our relationship with information over the last 25 years. Eg, in the past you wouldn’t dream of driving across the country without a atlas or maps and a plan in your mind about your planned route. Now, we don’t feel any pressure to think or plan. Google maps will tell you when the time comes.
That same thing is happening with our knowledge of current events and history.
So if as AI takes control of things like Facebook and Wikipedia, it could change “reality” whenever it wants. Will our electorate be able to know what they need to know to make good decisions?
The lies told about the Biden laptop alone make the last election essentially “stolen.”
Dan, you are right about information.
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
― George Orwell, 1984
And our mass media is absolutely complicit in this.
