Is mixing religion and politics leading to rise of the 'nones'?

“The marrying of religion and politics among conservatives to create the well-known and powerful religious right that forms a voting bloc for the Republican Party has led some Americans to abandon their ties to the Christian faith and join the ranks of secularists, scholars argue in a new book.” - C.Post

If someone can abandon Christ for this (or any other reason), they had no true saving faith to begin with. Better to acknowledge their agnosticism openly than cling to an empty profession.

In some cases, the bastard marriage of the Gospel to American exceptionalism has produced another gospel … a false one.

Tyler is a pastor in Olympia, WA and works in State government.

What I find interesting is that when I was 5 years old, my dad left the “church” because it was supporting liberal political causes. It was an ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) church. Dad was a professing believer, but I’m not sure if he was really committed to Christ. He quit going to church. Thankfully mom took us kids to good gospel teaching churches after the left the ELCA.

There are many churches that try to steer clear of politics, but there are also churches that call themselves Christian on both ends of the political spectrum. I have noticed however that those that are most likely to have a clear gospel message and a high regard for the word of God tend to be less supportive of left leaning politics. Is it because they have made a pact with the Republicans or is it because they see a clear contrast between many of the left policy positions and the scripture? I tend to think the latter.

BTW, now that Trump is not in office, I find it interesting that the conversation has shifted from how can Christians support that President, to how can Christians vote GOP. (BTW some here on SI have been consistent in being critical of both Trump and the GOP).
