Dr Suess books are great…if you want your kids to start doing LSD at a young age. Man those books are weird. Maybe I have no imagination or something.

I grew up on many of his books and loved them. I own and read a number of them to my own children. After hearing about the upcoming “cancellation,” I purchased 5 of the 6 on the list early this morning. Good thing too, as the prices today have been going crazy. Now, they will be here for my eventual grandchildren. In fact, I may spend some time reading all 5 when they arrive, as well as leave them out on my coffee table for guests to see, just because I love consuming things that others think I shouldn’t have, especially when I know there’s nothing wrong with them.

Of course, I’ve also been flying ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ (i.e. “Molon labe”) and NRA flags outside my home since the inauguration, so that may say something about my personality…

….when older National Geographic magazines are going to be “canceled” from the compilations the Society puts out. I just looked in my own collection, and the April 1927 issue has the same thing in it that got And to Think that I saw it on Mulberry Street canceled: an image of a man with Chinese features in a coolie hat. Other issues have plenty of dark-skinned men with curly hair in grass skirts—generally from Polynesia—that are portrayed in If I ran the Zoo.

It reminds me of when the Field Museum in Chicago was accused of bigotry because their Pawnee Lodge exhibit mentioned some of the “less pleasant” aspects of their historic culture like human sacrifice of captured girls. The Pawnee elders who had helped the Field build the exhibit responded by saying “No, that’s exactly what we were doing a couple of centuries ago.”

Maybe we need more of that attitude. Admit reality, even when it’s ugly.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
