Beware the Hero Pastor

“The apostle Paul—hero pastor if there ever was one—strongly condemned allegiances to leaders: “What I mean is that each one of you says, ‘I follow Paul,’ or ‘I follow Apollos,’…. The problem with human heroes is they can displace or diminish our heart’s loyalty to our ultimate hero, Jesus Christ.” - TGC

Oh the irony…

TGC is made up of a lot of hero pastors. They may not aspire to that but they certainly have attained it.

I grew up near this guy and the five sites of his church. One thing we might say about how one avoids becoming a “hero” pastor is…..that you resist the urge to “minister” to far more people than you can know personally, because in that case, you’re just preaching to them, not being their pastor.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.

Irony, indeed.

Tyler is a pastor in Olympia, WA and works in State government.
