From a personal perspective, which is your favorite Pauline epistle and why?

Topic tags

The question is about the epistle you yourself favor. This is not about which epistle you think is most important. Many of us would probably say Romans on that score. This is about which is your PERSONAL favorite, the one you enjoy most or the one that speaks to you most.

Some of you may consider Hebrews to have been written by Paul, but our assumption is that it is not. I don’t want to create a dilemma for someone whose favorite epistle is Hebrews but yet does not believe Paul wrote it!

Please consider sharing why you favor the epistle that you do, or perhaps which set (pastorals, prison, etc.).

Discussion

I have always loved 1 Timothy. Perhaps it is because of God’s call to the pastorate. I love its emphasis on solid doctrine, personal integrity, and its blueprint for the church — both in choosing officers and how the church is to do what it does. Of course 2 Timothy continues in the same way, and Titus repeats much and adds more. So the pastorals are my favorite in general, with 1 Timothy being my favorite of the three.

Mine used to be Romans but I love Galatians and especially Philippians. I love Paul’s attack on works righteousness in the Judaizers and his own history. “Not having my own righteousness” is beautifully intertwined with Paul’s synergistic pursuit of sanctification in Christ’s power.
