R.C. Sproul: By reading these books, a student can get a basic feel for and understanding of the scope of the Bible without getting bogged down in the more difficult sections. From there, he or she can fill in the gaps to complete the reading of the entire Bible.

I appreciate Sproul’s thought and goal here, and concede that it’s far better than throwing “Our Daily Bread” or such at someone and just kinda hopin’ that the reading of the Word catches on. That said, I’m glad I was never “smart enough” to figure out a short “Cliff’s Notes” version of the Bible, so I just read through it, even before I was saved. (crackpot prophecy persuaded me I wanted to read through it before I died, no kidding) I wonder if the solution to a lot of the Biblical illiteracy we see would be alleviated if we simply told people something like “Start in the gospels, but read through the whole text….like Nike says, just do it.”

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
