….that we would have to discuss this—this certainly would have been something those taking, say, the Oregon Trail (never to see loved ones again on this earth) would have had to deal with. That said, there is something scary about this, and the way our discussions of Social Security and the like go—unless we are lucky or unlucky enough to die suddenly, as in a heart attack, all of us will at some point rely on the kindness and generosity of others for our survival when we get old and feeble. The question is really “are we willing that our loved ones die in misery because we wouldn’t help, or are we going to lift a finger or a wallet to help?”.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
