Bible Is Biggest Influence on My Thinking, Says Hillary Clinton

“At the risk of appearing predictable, the Bible was and remains the biggest influence on my thinking. I was raised reading it, memorizing passages from it and being guided by it. I still find it a source of wisdom, comfort and encouragement.” CPost

It must have really influenced her thinking on abortion and homosexuality! Also, behold this quote:

“I have always cherished the Methodist Church because it gave us the great gift of personal salvation but also the great obligation of social gospel

  • The Methodist Church “gave us” the Gospel? All hail John Wesley instead of Jesus Christ?

I know that’s what she’s doing; it just makes me sick to realize that people are clueless enough to actually buy this nonsense.

I don’t fall for her spin or for that matter the political spin on either side but then, here is a double standard I have noticed. I was recently listening to David Barton trying to spin the idea that various founding fathers were orthodox Christians. A few quotes that mention God makes those guys Christians, but on the other hand, a quote from Hillary Clinton saying she appreciates the Bible makes her a hypocrite.

It is bewildering.

I can totally believe this, because i know she comes from a liberal, mainline, Methodist church (from Wikipedia, but I’ve read this elsewhere as well):

Rodham’s early political development was shaped most by her high school history teacher (like her father, a fervent anticommunist), who introduced her to Goldwater’s The Conscience of a Conservative, and by her Methodist youth minister (like her mother, concerned with issues of social justice), with whom she saw and met civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., in Chicago in 1962.

I just think that she’s been reading and understanding the bible within the Neo-Orthodox or liberal interpretation, like so many of the liberal mainline denominations. I also agree with Jim that this is some red meat to take the evangelical votes, like the astroturfedFaith Voters for Hillary” profile on Twitter.

Let’s face it - mainline/liberal denominations are largely in the subsidiaries of the Democratic party now. Since they’ve given away all theological underpinnings to anchor belief in, the only real role that they can have as religious organizations are for ‘social justice’ and political activism (usually of the feminist/liberation theology stripe). That’s what they are, and that’s what they do, and that’s why they are largely dying or being cooped by NPOs.

"Our task today is to tell people — who no longer know what sin is...no longer see themselves as sinners, and no longer have room for these categories — that Christ died for sins of which they do not think they’re guilty." - David Wells

Greg - I agree with your remarks that spin occurs on both sides of the political aisle. I, too, am sick of hearing about how our founding fathers were all born again, fervent Christians who worshipped Christ as Lord of their lives. I don’t think so. Some of them undoubtedly were. Jefferson sure wasn’t. Franklin wasn’t. Just because they lived in an era with more outward piety sprinkled throughout their writings (and remember, they were politicians!) doesn’t mean they were actually believers who had accepted the Gospel.

Jay - good points.
