"Nope. I'm not gonna pray for his good. I'm going to pray that (Barack Obama) dies and goes to hell."
I don’t want to be anywhere near Mr. Anderson when the pianos start falling from the sky. Ouch.

Pray for the president’s safety, and his ongoing conversion. Pray also that this wicked pastor will convert. This really is horrifying.Another reason is practical- he’s getting more attention with time, and like Fred Phelps, it would behoove us to be familiar with who he is so that we can avoid being lumped in with him by our neighbors with whom we are trying to represent Christ to. And let’s face it- a milder form of his sentiments definitely has an audience in the broad spectrum of IFB churches. It would do us well to evaluate our own approach in light of his horrific behavior.

[Jay C] We ought to have no part in spreading his madness. Thanks Jay C for this comment. I understand your sentiment but I support Greg posting this filing.
For many of us, S/I serves as a fundamental / religious news source. To report the news is NOT to support nut cases like Steve Anderson. It’s good to know what this kook is doing.
What is sad is that there are people who willingly sit under this kind pulpit pollution every week.

Anderson was an SI member we banned when I was Forum Director. I believe we banned his sister or sister-in-law, too. In addition to the border patrol, he’s gained a degree of notoriety for sermons where he smashed a TV with a sledge hammer, went on about the KJV phrase “pisseth against a wall,” and other such nonsense. He has certainly gained his share of attention on the internet, that’s for certain. He even was interviewed by the American Bible Society for his Scripture memory work- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfnB4qWJhes

[Jim Peet]There is often a fine line between reporting news and helping an attention-seeker get what he’s after. I’m often not sure which side of that line one item or another is on. In defense of the post I’ll say that it’s better for a believer to read about this guy here first than to hear it from an unbelieving co-worker first.[Jay C] We ought to have no part in spreading his madness.

In criticism of it… well, we probably are adding to his notoriety a bit (though only marginally compared to CNN).
It’s an interesting question. I don’t yet find it easy to answer.
Views expressed are always my own and not my employer's, my church's, my family's, my neighbors', or my pets'. The house plants have authorized me to speak for them, however, and they always agree with me.

The classic abuser ‘sets up’ situations to which he reacts with violence, then he rationalizes his behavior, isolates and intimidates his victims, and when confronted will shift the blame or deny wrongdoing. If he is doing this publicly, what do you think he is doing at home? It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if he created a situation where he committed suicide-by-cop. He’s obviously already toyed with the idea. That degree of manipulation and desire to dominate must permeate every aspect of his life. He’s not just a false teacher- I believe, based on his words and conduct, that he is physically dangerous to the people around him.
[Greg Linscott] As Rod Dreher noted…Pray for the president’s safety, and his ongoing conversion. Pray also that this wicked pastor will convert. This really is horrifying.
No kidding. This guy is doing far more damage to the kingdom of God than he knows. If he wants to pray for Obama to die and go to hell, then I wonder about his understanding of hell and also about God’s providential control of earthly leaders. For whatever reason, the Omnipotent and Omniscient Lord of all chose to place Obama in the White House. To say that you want that leader to die and go to hell is an indirect assault on God’s character [because God is not good] , knowledge [because God should not have put him there] , and wisdom [because God acted foolishly or rashly by placing Obama in office]. I’m not even going to touch the “he should die so that America can be saved” part of his rant.
Another reason is practical- he’s getting more attention with time, and like Fred Phelps, it would behoove us to be familiar with who he is so that we can avoid being lumped in with him by our neighbors with whom we are trying to represent Christ to. And let’s face it- a milder form of his sentiments definitely has an audience in the broad spectrum of IFB churches. It would do us well to evaluate our own approach in light of his horrific behavior.I don’t think that we help anyone by providing a 16th minute of fame for wackos like this. While there might be a productive way to inform others, I think that we’re giving him what he wants by getting his name on this site [and on CNN, HuffPo, and other news websites and blogs]. You don’t get in a pulpit and make comments like that unless you’re either deranged or seeking publicity; the fact that this is the second time he’s made SI and used to be a member here makes it all the more reason to mark him and avoid him.
I’m thinking that a passage from I Timothy may apply here:
False Teachers and True ContentmentFinally, if my unsaved co-worker came up to me and asked about him, I would guess that hearing the story from them would be enough to react to. Knowing about his situation ahead of time just makes me look worse for paying attention to his antics.
Teach and urge these things. If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain. Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world…
Fight the Good Fight of Faith
…But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

[BryanBice] On the kook’s website, his link page lists dozens of other “independent fundamental Baptist churches,” but limits inclusion to those that are KJV-only & have organized soul-winning programs. I’d hate to think that there are that many other crazies in IFB-dom who want to identify with this guy. Would that they obey their KJV Bibles instead and separate from him!
Anderson can link to anyone he wants to, whether they like it or not. What would be interesting is to see how many of those churches linked link back to him.
