We know that Jude refers to material contained in The Assumption of Moses, and we often turn our attention to the validity of the source of Jude’s information. But, forgetting that issue, what is the MEANING of Jude 1:9?
But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”

"The Midrash Detective"

inneresting.

i recently finished deuteronomy, and this is writen:

Deuteronomy 34:5-6 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor; but no man knows his burial place to this day.

My somewhat humorous personality wants to go somewhere like “it is with Jimmy Hoffa and Amelia Earhart” but I am sure that it would be no help to the discussion, so I’ll just say we don’t know.

[Ed Vasicek] We know that Jude refers to material contained in The Assumption of Moses, and we often turn our attention to the validity of the source of Jude’s information. But, forgetting that issue, what is the MEANING of Jude 1:9?

Seems like the meaning of Jude 9 is to give an example of how Michael contended with the devil. It would seem the part about Moses is just informational. I wonder if a Jewish rabbi would understand that Jude is referring too. Often these little “where did that come from?” blurbs in the NT were traditional handed down orally, rather than written in the OT (like Jannes and Jambres being the names of Pharaoh’s priests that opposed Moses).

But I think the Deut passage is pretty clear that he was buried.

Just kidding. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php] http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-forum/img.gif

When I read that passage I think back to all the things that the children of Israel idolized- the golden calf made by Aaron, the brazen serpent Moses made (2 Kings 18:4), Gideon’s ephod (Judges 8:27), Jeroboam’s golden calves (1 Kings 12:32)… I think if the people of Israel knew where to find Moses’s body, they’d have it bronzed or something, and it would be the most worshiped idol of all time. But Scripture states that God buried him “in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor”… perhaps God placed a cloaking force field around the site so nobody could find it. That would be cool.
