If you could change the name of your church, would you?

Name changes are all around us. Some of them seem absurd (e.g., “Converge” for the Baptist General Conference); even when some have good logic behind them, the change is just not right IMO — like Cru for Campus Crusade). Churches are taking out the name of their denomination or type. I personally dislike that trend — if you are part of a group, you ought to be proud of that fact or get out! I know, things are not that black and white. Still, just saying.

Anyhow, please feel free to express what you would call your church or a new church that was starting out.

If I could, I would change our church’s name to Messiah Bible Church because people who come here will get a good dose of the Messiah and a good dose of Bible.

What are your thoughts?

Our church started as an old outpost church over 175 years ago…Washington Baptist Church. No one uses “Washington” to describe where we live…it is only used to determine polling locations…but it’s 177 years old…I’ve switched Bible versions and we sing more than just hymns and have started small groups, but a name change might just get me fired…

with the descriptor “Baptist”. Though, I do tend to like geographic descriptors (Salada Beach Baptist) rather than generics like “Faith Baptist” or “Calvary Baptist”. I do think it is counterproductive to use overly precise descriptors e.g. Bible Baptist, King James Baptist, XYZ Fundamental Baptist.
