Obituary:
Rev. Jonathan Paul Ayers, age 28, of Lavonia, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Stephens County Hospital. Born February 11, 1981 in Franklin County, he was the son of John Ayers and Abigail Nelson. He was a graduate of Franklin County High School. He attended Luther Rice University. He was active in FFA, where he served as a State Officer. Rev. Ayers was an ordained minister with the Southern Baptist Association and was the pastor of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife: Abby Hulsey Ayers; and sister: Rebecca Ayers Floyd. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 4, 2009 at Shoal Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Adam Gragg and Rev. Daniel Parker officiating. Rev. Ayers will be placed in the church at 12:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Gainesville, GA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to Carpenters for Christ, 1108 Jody Dr., Seneca, SC 29678.

This young man may simply have used bad judgment in the person he chose to give a ride to, but the fact (verified by videotape) is that a known drug-using woman got out of his car right before he was shot to death, and he did not respond to an officer showing him his badge, but rammed the officer instead. He could very likely have been guilty of nothing; however, it might be prudent to let the investigation play out before assuming that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Either way, it is a terribly sad situation, and his wife, family, and friends are in my prayers.
