I won’t “out” any of my sharper iron brothers … but there were a number of them at the conference!

Great singing … great speaking … great time.

For those watching via video, three talks are must-see: Dever, MacArthur, and Piper.

Is this really a concern to anyone who actually went?

Not to me…but I would have liked to have gone!

"Our task today is to tell people — who no longer know what sin is...no longer see themselves as sinners, and no longer have room for these categories — that Christ died for sins of which they do not think they’re guilty." - David Wells

Just a bit of humor … intended for those calling for separation from Piper!

Ken Fields

Well, the only point I intended to make was that attending a single conference doesn’t define what your priorities are.

I do think that there are those who will be considering how their relationship with Piper might change- even in the T4G scope.

Even mentioned at T4G.

Some guys thought that Piper may be asked about it during one of the discussion panels … but it wasn’t.

I’m sure that MacArthur isn’t pleased, but he did sit by Piper on the platform!!

I just finished listening to a number of these messages and I realize again why the YF’s are drawn to the CE’s. This is preaching that reaches the heart. The sad thing is that some people, unable to find fault with the preaching, will choose dismiss the whole thing because of its music, Bible versions and/or associations (as in John MacArthur is with John Piper who talks with Rick Warren.)

That depends… If your heart is inclined to the theology / the speakers / the movement, it will reach your heart. I haven’t listened to any messages from this years conference, but messages from past years have not moved me. Not that that proves anything… but I can see how they might move someone already inclined to the theology being preached.

Ron, the whole fuss over new evangelicalism wasn’t over the preaching. No one accused BG as a poor preacher - he was electrifying. His preaching wasn’t the point, his associations, philosophy, alliances, etc. were the issue.

What does electrifying have to do with good preaching? This is a problem with some in fundamentalism, they think entertaining preaching equals good preaching. A good sermon accurately explains the text. I hate when I hear people talking about how good a sermon was when what was said had nothing to do with the text. It is this same thought process the leads to the idea that those who already like the theology of T4G will be moved by its preaching and those who aren’t will not be. When what makes a sermon good or bad is divorced from what the text actually says and means then people will simply listen for what they want to hear and not what the text says. Those who will be drawn to the preaching of T4G are those of us who want to know what scripture says and let that determine our theology. Many(not all) of those who reject there preaching are those who have already determined their theology and are looking for someone to preach what fits that. Like Ron said most won’t even attempt to find fault with there handling of the text.
By the way, I attended the confernce and was greatly built up.

Don, if Piper dis-invited Warren tomorrow, would you still feel this way?

Brandon, have you listened to any recordings of the early BG? If not, you really don’t have any right to assume what I mean by electrifying, or whether his preaching was good or not. My point was that we can’t simply assume that because someone offers ‘good preaching’ (however we might define it), that they are immune from criticism, or even from separation for good Biblical reasons.
[blee25] This is a problem with some in fundamentalism, they think entertaining preaching equals good preaching.
Right, so now you are assuming that I think entertaining = good. But you don’t really know that, do you?

I think you are making my point. You apparently like the theology of the Togetherness boys.

Well, Jay, the Warren thing is only part of a pattern. There would have to be a wholesale reversal and repudiation of a whole pattern of ministry for the last 40 years or so… In other words, it’s not that I thought any differently about Piper pre-Warren than I did post-Warren. The Warren invitation is par for the course, entirely in keeping with Piper’s ministry philosophy. It is no surprise.

I didn’t attend the conference but some friends of mine, who are from a background that is decidedly non Calvinistic told me what impressed them was that the preaching exalted the Lord Jesus Christ and the Gospel and that the preachers “stuck to the Bible”. They are not Calvinists but appreciated what they heard.
