“ ‘I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet,’ Chavez said in speech to mark World Water Day.”

And that probably explains what happened to the dinosaurs.

I’d ask how kooks like him become leaders of entire countries, but I don’t want to think about the answer.

the common experience in south america is that businesses from foreign capitalistic systems exploit their resources and people. i think chavez’s main point is that if they let foreign greed continue to exploit them, venezuela will turn into a barren wasteland. i don’t know if there were actually any rainforests that are now deserts, but there is plenty of deforestation.

if the common south american experience was small local businesses driving a local economy, expectations might be different. but there is no “american dream” in south america.

i think chavez is hoping most venezuelans don’t figure out that socialism doesn’t remove human greed. it only changes the powerful from businessmen to politicians.

Are you sure it wasn’t trans fats though? You know how dangerous partially hydrogenated oils can be! And maybe Twinkies did the Martians in.

I understand the aversion to unrestrained capitalism, but one reason it doesn’t work for them is their economic structures and relationships don’t allow for a truly competitive market.
