This statement is the key:  "But what you cannot do is think that the person’s faith is a work that merits God’s grace."

Faith is in no way meritorious.

The perfect life of Jesus was meritorious.  Agreed!  (and eternally thankful that this is so)   But are any of the works of descendants of Adam meritorious?
