The Old Testament Is Dying: An Interview with Brent A. Strawn

I read this book last year; it’s excellent.

Tyler is a pastor in Olympia, WA and works in State government.

Western civilization is dying. Sure, the biggest part of that is Scripture, but I remember having weekly chats with coworkers in Malaysia and Thailand, along with some U.S. based coworkers, and the striking thing was that THEY were the ones that got cultural references, not my U.S. based coworkers. We’re forgetting where we came from, which is a sure way of not knowing where we’re going.

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.

I’ve told my international students they’re fortunate to be studying in a Christian school, because they’ll understand more about Western Civ. than the vast majority of Americans in public schools, let alone exchange students. I have absolutely no idea how you could even make sense of Shakespeare (forget about Dante, Donne, Milton, et al.) without a basic knowledge of the Bible.
