5 Actions Churches Should Take in a Changing Legal Culture

David, here’s the NY Times link. Bruni, for whatever virtues or faults he has, simply doesn’t say what “News For Christians” claims. Tyler linked it earlier as well here. The actual claim is that religious conservatives will naturally come to agree with homosexual marriage as their views evolve with time to contradict the Scriptures.

There are certainly others who would advocate exactly what you claim in public, but Bruni and the NY Times editorial staff do not.

Back to the subject, the list of things to do is a good start—churches do indeed need to put these things in church constitutions. More importantly, I think we need to start teaching sexuality as not just about sexuality, but as reflective of how we view God. We abhor divorce not just because it leads to bad results, though that is certainly the case, but rather because marriage is supposed to be an image of God’s grace to us—forebearance as we treated God horribly. Same thing with our rejection of homosexuality, really—it images two “gods” or two “churches”, but not Christ’s love for the Church. Win the theological argument, and we will win the sociological argument, at least among our membership.
