Does Theology Cause Sexual Abuse?
“I have heard many people arguing—simplistically—about theological or ecclesiological ‘reasons’ for sexual abuse, usually in the context of defending the arguer’s own particular theological tradition or church polity.” - Russel Moore
Moore points out, ably, that predators can thrive in a lot of settings, and that blaming the setting for the act will actually condition us not to take action on the actual warning signs that something is going on. Well said.
One thing that needs to be said, though—and I’m pretty sure Moore has said it elsewhere—is that our corporate culture matters in how we respond to such crimes, and many predators can and do look for signs that their target is “soft”.
Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
