Not trying to defend Hovind, but it strikes me that alleging mail fraud and getting a conviction only on "contempt of court" seems like a colossal waste of time for the DOJ when they've got very real criminals like Lois Lerner and Hillary Clinton that have pretty basic open & shut cases against them.

"The contempt charges against Hovind and Hansen, a church trustee, were filed after the men submitted additional court papers contesting the land's ownership. Among them was a "lis pendens," a document warning potential buyers that the property was under legal dispute and which Hovind described to his daughter as "dog crap" on the government's shoe. It was for those actions Hovind was found guilty Thursday."

"On the one guilty charge, if Judge Rodgers does not overturn it, there is no limit to the penalty that she can impose."

"One Hovind supporter mentioned to several others that they should write letters to Judge Rodgers and local Congressional leaders in support of Hovind requesting a pardon and for this conviction to carry a light sentence.

"It's my understanding she has unlimited maximum sentence," Davis said. "I think that she will try to give him the longest sentence that she possibly can; that has been her history."

I haven't really seen any speculation about whether her email fiasco knocks Hillary out of the running for 2016.  Is she out?  (Thoughts?...)

Larry, since the President doesn't seem to be clueing in to (or caring about ) what a colossal breach of protocol, policy, security, and law is at hand here, I think she skates.  Just like Lois Lerner.  Just like the New Black Panthers.

No defense for tax evasion, but most of Hovind's indictments, like the "structuring" charges, are Mickey Mouse crimes.  Nothing like risking confidential and classified information on your server and not handing over documentation to the State Department, and certainly nothing like using political affiliation as a proxy for tax audits.
