Manmade pollutants now blamed for global cooling

“Pollution in the atmosphere is having an unexpected consequence, scientists say – it’s helping to cool the climate, masking some of the global warming that’s occurred so far,” Scientific American reported last week. OneNewsNow

In the 1970s, it was thought that particulate emissions, among other things, would lead to a global ice age. That noted, though I agree with most of the conclusions of the article, I dare suggest that we ought not pay too much attention simply because the bias shows through so clearly. There comes a point, I think, where one crosses a line between “I think we need to pay attention to where the data are actually pointing” and “ha ha look at the guys trying to prove something that clearly ain’t happening!”.

Krakatoa’s 1883 eruption spewed so much particulate matter (i.e. pollution) into the atmosphere that the result was, “Average global temperatures fell by as much as 1.2 degrees Celsius in the year following the eruption. Weather patterns continued to be chaotic for years and temperatures did not return to normal until 1888.”

It’s a phenomenon known as “Volcanic Winter”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volcanic_winter
