The early euphoria after 1991, when Russia welcomed western missionaries, dissipated close to 20 years ago as the FSB/KGB re-asserted control over the country and its neighbors. Unfortunately, the Moscow Patriarchate of the Orthodox Church in Russia, the main real rival to the power of the government, has long since decided to cast its lot with the government--a pattern really going back all the way to the Tsars.

Put in a rather cynical way, why bother with evangelism if you can use the secret police to kick your competition out of the country?

Aspiring to be a stick in the mud.
