Dealing with Jimmy Carter

I met Jimmy Carter 50 years ago during a summer high school program in Georgia. Several years ago I wrote him a letter asking some questions about what makes a good President, and he sent a handwritten response. He worked to "make the world better" based on what he thought the world should be (which is what everyone does). His Presidential policies were often weak and misguided. His theology is neo-orthodox, at best. He rejected inerrancy and verbal-plenary inspiration. His interview with Al Mohler is worth listening to.

Good motives and commendable character does not necessarily make a good president. Policies based upon political philosophy are more important. In the best of worlds, we want both good character and conservative philosophy. If that is not available, the right political philosophy gets my vote.

I agree with G.N. here, but if the choice were between Trump and Carter this election I could see why some of my SI friends might consider Carter based on his longstanding reputation of character. I cannot however understand why they think the current candidates for president have much difference in the area of personal character. Thus, I have to look at which policies would uphold character to the greatest level within our country.

No way. The major distinguishing thing of Carter, as well as other Democrats of the day, is that despite having graduated from USNA, he had no clue that the Soviets actually were a major threat to freedom. Regarding the people actually running....'oy vay! The only nice thing I can say is that it drives me to prayer.

Trump isn't promoting Bibles; he's promoting himself (as always) and is deceiving whoever is gullible enough to think he is actually promoting Bibles.

Brothers, the reason we have the current presidential candidates we do is because of God's judgment on our "Christian" nation. Bert is partly right: we need prayer, but we also need courageous Christians who will not bow the knee to and for political power.

I had to learn this lesson some years ago as part of a hiring committee for principal at my Christian school.

Between the two options, one had a stellar, warmhearted Christian testimony he offered; the other's sounded a little canned and fakish. In experience, they were largely the same and interviewed well.

I chose the former largely on the basis of testimony, and he ended up getting the job. He was a wonderful guy, but gave weak, ineffective leadership, leading to numerous problems and ultimately resulting in him getting fired.

The other guy was hired by another Christian school and, to all accounts, has done a great job.

Great character and strong Christian testimony doesn't always win, sadly.

In my opinion, Trump has done more harm to this country than the all the presidents since Carter combined. It's not just his policies, of which I disagree with many. He's worsened the culture in this country in general and in American Christianity in specific. American Christians now defend things that previously they would have considered absolutely indefensible. I made the mistake of voting for him in 2016 and I won't make that mistake again.

Trump has influenced American culture in that he reflects cultural characteristics already present in the culture and influences others to express what they already are. To many, Carter's election was a reaction to Nixon (and Ford's pardon of Nixon). Biden's election was a reaction to Trump (He lost after his first debate with Biden, being perceived as a bully). The next President - who knows? RFK, Jr is the unknown factor.
