Bob Jones University president Steve Pettit resigns

“The resignation is effective at the end of the current academic year. In a release from the university on March 30, Pettit thanked the students and staff and called his time as president ‘one of the greatest privileges of my life.’” - Post & Courier

John, read Dave Doran’s response to this in this forum. This link has already been posted and Dave pointed out it’s inadequacy quite well

From the BJU Alumni Facebook Page:

This afternoon, May 11, 2023, the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees unanimously appointed Dr. Gary Weier as acting CEO until end of day Tuesday, May 16, 2023. The full Board is scheduled to meet on that Tuesday and will decide as a Board how to proceed.

The Executive Committee expressed appreciation for Gary’s willingness to serve in this temporary position.

Dr. Bob Jones III posted the following on his Facebook page:

I must refute three misrepresentations of my character that have appeared on Facebook:

• I did not originate the board’s executive committee’s dialogues with the president which transpired over the past many months.

• The board’s executive committee never held their meetings at my residence, with or without my presence.

• Of course, I favor BJU’s regional accreditation. The process began while I was chairman of the board.

So it looks like Alan Benson will lead a interim transition leadership team that includes himself as acting CEO and Gary Weier and Bruce McAllister. Both Benson and Weier are current members of the BJU administration and McAllister was the long-time director of ministerial training at BJU. It looks like an intentional mix of current guard and old guard leadership.

“Appointing an acting CEO will give the Board of Trustees time to solicit qualified applicants, conduct interviews, and strategically evaluate candidates for the permanent position,” said Dawson. “We trust God will guide our steps as we look for the individual who will lead the University as we approach our century mark.”

It is unclear to me how not appointing a new president right away will impact the school. Hopefully this process will not take long as my gut says the school needs to get back to a place of stability soon and not continued uncertainty regarding its future and direction.
