Favorite Preachers

Forum category
Who is your favorite preacher? Maybe he preached a sermon you have always remembered. Maybe he died long ago and you have only read his sermons. He may have pastored a small country church and none of us have ever heard of him. I know all these men are only servants of God, mere vessels. But I like good preaching and I would like to know who the good preachers are in your eyes. If you can not narrow your list to one; give me a top 5. There are no right or wrong answers to this question, only opinions and we all have a couple of those.

My top five right now would be:

Tom Malone

W A Criswell

Don Savell

Harvey Reeves

S M Lockridge

Discussion

For me, listening to preaching is kinda’ like reading. I read for what I am interested in, and what I’m in the mood for. That probably doesn’t sound good on the surface, but what I mean is that sometimes I need encouragement, or maybe I want to clear some cobwebs in the book of Acts or Ezekiel. Some preachers definitely have the nostalgia factor and bring back happy memories.

In the nostalgia category would be:

Oliver B. Greene

Lester Roloff

B. R. Lakin

Vance Havner

J. Vernon McGee

Other (living) preachers that I enjoy tremendously are:

My pastor Thomas Gresham

Evangelist Mark McGaughey

Evangelist David Spurgeon

Dr. Peter Ruckman

Evangelist Sam Gipp

Dr. S. M. Davis

Not necessarily in order …

R.C. Sproul,

Alistair Begg,

John MacArthur,

Chuck Swindall, and of course

Adam Godshall (my pastor).

I have also gleaned much from …

J. Vernon McGee,

David Jeremiah, and

Adrian Rogers.

Dennis The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him. ~ Proverbs 18:17

Paul Downey (my pastor :))

Greg Mazak

Tim Jordan

Dave Doran

Kevin Bauder

Mark Minnick

The last four men all spoke at the same BJU Bible Conference one year. I took a few days off that year and had my own little “retreat.” It was an enormous blessing and had a great impact on my spiritual life.

Scott Linerud (my childhood pastor)

Steve Viars (my current pastor)

James MacDonald

John MacArthur

Paul Tripp

Putting fun in Fundamentalist.

I have a top three:

Dr. Mark Minnick - he can preach for an hour and a half and I am not ready for him to be finished.

Dr. Tim Jordan - his in-your-face style (in-a-good-way) and his ability to make me think outside of my box yet still in God’s box is very refreshing

Dave Doran - his knowledge of Scripture, fundamentalism, and religious trends coupled with his ability to package his thoughts in such a logical way feeds my soul like few others even attempt

Honorable mentions that I listen to but with caution: John MacArthur, Ray Comfort, and some British speaking guy who’s name I cannot remember

I’m a little surprised no one has mentioned James Montgomery Boice, former pastor of 10th Presbyterian. I really enjoyed listening to him whenever I could catch his messages. I also like CJ Mahaney.

John Piper

JD Crowley

Chris Barney

God has used all of these men to shape my thinking and living.

I’d say my top five are:

1) Joel Osteen

2) TD Jakes

3) Joyce Meyers

4) Benny Hinn

5) Harold Camping (sp)

Did I scare anyone there? :-) Good, because I’m joking. :-)

Nephew-in-law,

An email was about to be sent to the whole family asking for prayer for you, and proposing a charter of separation for your outright heresy :)

Everybody knows that Joyce Meyers can preach better than Joel Osteen. Revise your order!

I think the Greats go without saying, Joseph.

E.V. Hill,Tony Evans, and James Ford are some of my favorites. Allister Begg is good. Pastor Ed Vasicek is a very good preacher too. I sat under his ministry for nine years. My pastor while at Moody, John Taylor wasn’t the greatest preacher but I still remember a lot of his sayings. Several times he would say to the congregation, “You people come in here and sing the songs and when I look at your faces you look like you’ve been baptized in pickle juice.” I’ll never forget the people’s faces when he would say it. They got the point. It’s time to enjoy your salvation.

Don't be a great pastor, just be a pastor and let history judge for itself.

Ted Bigelow

Steve Lawson

Erwin Lutzer

Sinclair Ferguson

Albert Mohler

Paul Washer

S. Lewis Johnson (archived sermons)

Blessings, Kim :)

I have enjoyed all the lists. Some names I recognize, some not so much. Like, who is this Camping guy? Anyway here are my top five:

Pastor Steve Cox (my pastor)

Andrew Murray

Creflo Dollar

Charles Stanley

Adrian Rogers

There are others of course, but these Saints have truely impacted my spiritual walk. Thank you Father for them.

A fellow soldier for our LORD, Jesus Christ.

Dr. John Ashbrooke

Dr. Mark Minnick

Dr. John McCormick

Dr. Bob Jones Jr on a Sunday morning

Dr. John MacArthur (reading his books)

Pastor Nathan Anderson - my former pastor who studies well and then translates the “deep” stuff into language the whole country congregation could understand.

Those are my adult favorites. As I teen I was inspired by:

Dr. Glen Schunk

Dr. Bud Lyles

Dr. Ron Comfort

L Strickler

[Jimmy Anderson] I have enjoyed all the lists. Some names I recognize, some not so much. Like, who is this Camping guy? Anyway here are my top five:
Camping is Harold Camping, who just deceived thousands of people with the prophecy that Christ would return on May 21. He is (was?) President of Family Radio International, a chain of radio stations. If you search SI, you should find a couple threads on him and his prophesy.

Camping’s name is being thown out as a joke…unless someone wants to admit to enjoying listening to heresy? Any takers out there?

My wife asked me why I put the Camping comment in there. It was just an attempt at a poorly exicuted joke. I would like to think that those that were following this “man’s” teachings have returned to the true word of God. Have a blessed day.

A fellow soldier for our LORD, Jesus Christ.

Jimmy,

I got the joke, and also the joke about Dollar.

He is a cousin to that guy who wrote the book on Fundamentalism right?
