Jerry Falwell Jr. emerges as possible Trump cabinet pick

“Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. visited Trump Tower in New York City last Thursday to meet with the president-elect… Falwell declined to confirm or rule out whether he was being vetted as secretary of education but told the newspaper he will ‘definitely play a role’ in the Trump administration.” BNG

I wouldn’t nominate him for dog-catcher!

This doesn’t make any sense at all. Does Falwell even hold a legitimate Ph. D, or is it honorary?
I’m beginning to wonder if President-elect Trump is meeting with people just to fog up the press’s reporting and speculations.

“Falwell attended private schools in the Lynchburg area, attending Lynchburg Christian Academy, where he graduated in 1980, and attended Liberty University, where he obtained his B.A. in Religious Studies in 1984. Falwell then attended the University of Virginia School of Law, where he obtained his J.D. in 1987.

Falwell is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia to practice law in Virginia, United States District Courts in both Eastern and Western districts of Virginia, the Fourth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals, and before the Supreme Court of the United States.”

He obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and was licensed to practice law in 1987.”

Isn’t this just typical politics as usual? You have to take care of the people that got you elected. Falwell as president of the world’s largest Christian university was sadly one of Trump’s biggest tools he used to seduce and deceive evangelicals. Gotta return the favor.

He is a lawyer, after all. Just kidding … I hope.

Really, apart from Bannon, most of Trump’s appointments have been pretty shrewd. Falwell was a “useful idiot” during the primaries, but given that very issue, I don’t see him finding a place for Falwell. I could be wrong. Falwell has a real, earned doctorate (“juris doctor” is what “JD” means, after all), ahd he’s got a decent history (at least until last year) leading Liberty into the big leagues of colleges. But I just don’t see what he would add in DC.

…for a minute there, I had to check to make sure I wasn’t reading the comments from Huffington Post.

Vitriol much?

Actually, I wondered about whether he may have been promised something before the election. ?????

How could it be the HP without a string of obscenities and sexual references? :^)

Seriously, I have had to wonder, with Paul, whether there were bribes involved in some of these cases. The Babylon Bee certainly pondered this, repeatedly. And the reality here is that on both sides of the aisle, the candidates had some flaws were pretty obvious, so no matter who you ask, you’re going to get some strong opinions—there are not that many people who unapologetically voted for Mrs. Clinton, and probably even fewer who did the same for Mr. Trump.

Will it happen? Who knows. Maybe Secretary of Education!

I think that if 2016 has proven anything, it’s that all the norms and regular options are null and void. We’re in what someone described as cloud-cuckoo-land.

True….it doesn’t get much worse than HP comments. JFTR, I was not a Trump supporter and I think Jerry, Jr. made a HUGE error in judgment to endorse him. I do not for a second think that he made some sort of under-the-table deal with Trump. But it just seems to me that to use the invectives the OP did (Scary…’dog-catcher’, etc…) toward a Christian brother with whom most people here would agree with 90+ percent of the time, seemed a bit beyond the pale. I actually think it would be a good idea to put an Evangelical on the Supreme Court. There hasn’t been one on there in my lifetime or perhaps ever. The Elites wouldn’t permit it, but right now, 40% of the population is not represented in the make-up of the Supreme Court and there are only Catholics, Jews and Agnostics on there at the moment. I’d be perfectly happy with Falwell on the Court and then I’ll look at my window at the pigs flying by. :-D

If it were someone truly committed to the first Fundamental (whether he called himself fundamentalist or not), it could be a great thing, I think. I have thought for a while that a lot of our legal and societal slide is because the legal doctrine of stare decisis (let the decision stand) is very similar to the Catholic doctrine of the authority of the Church, as well as the Talmudic impulse in Judiasm. You make mistakes and let them pile up because of the Council of Trent, the Talmud, or whatever.

However, the First Fundamental/Sola Scriptura more or less say, along with Christ, that you can walk away from bad decisions without feeling bad about it. Not that we fundagelicals always DO correct our mistakes—far from it—but at least it’s philosophically tenable if we really believe Sola Scriptura. So I’d love to see some fundagelicals on the court—my question is simply whether Falwell’s legal gifts are sufficient, or whether he’s really more of an administrator.

As far as Supreme Court, Falwell would never survive the confirmation process.

Secretary of Education? Interesting, since many Christians have wanted to abolish this Dept. since Carter started it.

Another interesting note: Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, was a major factor in Trump’s victory over Clinton. Kushner is an observant Orthodox Jew, his wife (Trump’s daughter) converted before they married. Yesterday Trump said that his son-in-law could bring peace between Israelis and Palestinians. And Kushner’s address is (not kidding) 666 5th Aveneue.
