Baptist Preacher Blasts Congregant During Sermon for Sleeping; 'Hissy Fit' Goes Viral

Is there a fundamentalist version of the Stockholm Syndrome that causes people to stay in ministries like this?

Been there, done that. And I wear my tee shirt to church.

BTW, this type of pastoral abuse is not as rare as we’d like it to be.

Who kept recording even as he was being blasted from the pulpit

“Wish you’d stop bein’ so good to me, Cap’n.”

I wrote this in the contact form on the church’s website:

“I saw the video of the rant that Pastor Standridge engaged in on May 19th. That alone should disqualify him from continuing as your pastor.”

How did folks come to the conclusion that this was a fundamentalist church? I tried to find something that would say that or indicate that at the church’s website, but I couldn’t find anything. I did see that they have a woman who is a ministry/ministerial associate and with a position described in a way that I’ve never seen at a fundamentalist church.

I am not denying he is, but wondering if that is a confirmed point or if he is some kind of Lone Ranger guy with quirks all his own. Anybody know?

Guess if I would read the article better I would have seen that the pastor describes himself this, “an old sovereign grace Baptist with the soul of a Pentecostal.”

Have to cut this guy some slack. It is probably a southern, blue collar kind of church where this kind of thing is endearing. It is a cultural thing. We ought not to let the sensibilities of our own milieu color our view. We are just looking in and were not present and part of the congregation.

I recall several occasions when Paul Tassell did the same thing at Grandview Park Baptist, and his people loved him dearly.

Dave, I would say that he isn’t a fundamentalist in the terms of the IFB circle. But you must look at StuffFundieslike with a grain of salt. They group a lot of stuff together as fundamentalism, which when dug further isn’t even fundamentalist, but maybe even charismatic or other type of things.

He seems to be rather comfortable with his message. Like it is a regular event. Which would not be culturally acceptable. But Paul addressed some people in his epistles rather sternly too.

Maybe we could have a poll of the preachers here:

1. Have you ever done this in church?

2. Have you ever done this in your office while preparing a sermon?

3. Have you ever done this in the car alone on your way home after church?

4. I always have control of myself

5. My people never frustrate me. They have never done anything like the people that were being confronted on the video.

I’ll admit to being guilty of doing number 3.

So Donn, you are suggesting there is a culture where this kind of stuff fits the biblical image of a shepherd such as revealed in 1 Peter 5:1-4?

I saw this video after studying III John 9-11 with our church family. The pastor in this video is a modern day Diotrephes! In no culture would his actions from the pulpit represent a servant of Jesus Christ. His behavior contradicts the sweet counsel of Paul to Timothy in II Timothy 2:24-26 and the final word on leadership from Jesus in Mark 10:42-45. The man in this video is totally unfit to be a pastor of a New Testament church.

Donn, I cannot “cut this guy slack”… he is abusing his responsibility as a shepherd to build up his church with Scripture. He is demonstrating, in my opinion, that he is unfit for pastoral ministry. There is no grace present in his words or actions. He was interviewed by FoxNews and he indicated that he often yells at his congregation because that’s the way that he handles things.

I don’t think it matters whether or not his congregation has come to accept this as the norm…it’s sinful.
