"Nope. I'm not gonna pray for his good. I'm going to pray that (Barack Obama) dies and goes to hell."
It’s overstating to lump him in with the other men as far as influence goes. The three men you mentioned were nationally known, and built sprawling ministries that continued well beyond their lives. Anderson pastors a storefront church. That isn’t to say that’s what is important in the long term, but there you go.

I wasn’t thinking of his influence. Thankfully it seems limited to around 50 people, and whatever churches or groups he is possibly associated with vis-à-vis his webiste. When I say “many of them” I could probably have more clearly phrased it “a majority of them”, “them” being the groups Susan mentioned as links on his website.
I was thinking of his theology and style when I compared him to the three charlatans above.

[Norm] He’s sort of the new century version of Hyles, Roloff, Gray, and other wackos who have co-opted the fundamentalist moniker.Who’s coopted whom here? If my memory serves me correctly the Ministerial guys at BJU commissioned someone to do a survey of fundamentalist churches with the intention of compiling a map of church planting hotspots. Interestingly, the study showed that one of the largest single, coherent blocs within fundamentalism were churches in the Hyles network. There may be numerically more of “them” then there are of “us.” Who’s the radical fringe now? (-:

[Jay C] Paul, I sympathize with you and find myself going back and forth on it as well, esp. since the story seems to be gaining a full head of steam now, but I think that it’s worth noting that Christians don’t have any reputation to protect. We serve God and do His Will. We don’t stop to defend ourselves for being Christians or preaching the gospel. Anderson’s different in that he’s not acting like a Christian or preaching the gospel, but claims to be one.But we do have a reputation to protect, that of Christ. Why do we avoid the appearance of evil? Because we are concerned for our good reputation? No. We do so because we are concerned for how it reflects on the Christ whose name we bear. Anderson, by dragging the gospel through the mud, gives Christians, and more importantly the Christ we serve, a bad name. If we stay silent we may be complicit in his blasphemy.

Story’s made the main page of CNN.com, although it isn’t the lead article - yet. Greg, I think I’m going to have the bite the bullet and say that we should have run the article after all. It’s getting far more press that I’d expected.

This guy needs to stop. Earlier tonight, I read the account of Polycarp’s martyrdom. This guy is in such stark contrast to what a real martyr is. He is a disgrace.

While I have no sympathy for Anderson, the “reporter” was setting him up. Seriously, why is it a story that Anderson called a reporter a jerk? Anderson has no one to blame but himself for the attention he gets now from crazies and hostiles, but it is not Anderson who is pushing the story at this point.
[John Benzing] but it is not Anderson who is pushing the story at this point.I think he is - I think he likes the publicity and fifteen minutes of ‘fame’ he’s getting. He knows the more outlandish and bizarre his behavior, the more spotlights come his way.

The media likes nothing better than a religious wacko, and as long as his behavior is outrageous, they will be glad to shine the light on him and say “See- we have proof that Christians are nuts”. They’re both parasites- the media feeds off of Anderson, while Anderson sinks his fangs into Christianity and bleeds it for a platform and a following.
[Jay C] He knows the more outlandish and bizarre his behavior, the more spotlights come his way.I think I agree with John on this point. Anderson has been pretty averse to the media, feeling that they are distorting his message [irony].
Unfortunately he has stronger ties to the Religious Right than we’d like to admit. Check out this article:

Obama’s coming to Albany on Monday morning. He will be at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy at 11:00 a.m. which is about 15 minutes from my office. I would love to talk with Him about Jesus. I’m not sure the motorcade has it in their plans to stop by the church though.
