Young adults aged 18 to 25 had the highest level of mental illness at 30 percent

A more accurate headline would be:

The Government Agency that has the greatest vested interest in “Mental Health” treatment programs CLAIMS nearly 1 in 5 Americans had mental illness in 2009

Good point, Don.
I think, too, that everybody pretty much knows—who’s lived through it—that adolescence & early adulthood tend to be pretty rocky times emotionally. So much change. And all those hormones. I’m sure I was “mentally ill” from about age 14 to 22.. or maybe 32!

Another factor is that “mental health awareness” has never been higher. Though I believe there is real mental illness, I also believe that much of what is claimed is the result of so much attention to it and ever growing numbers of “disorders” regarding things that used to just be part of the ordinary struggles of life. Eventually, every moment a person is less than fully happy and at peace will have a fancy name and a diagnosis… and a drug.

Is there a Post-weekend Dysphoria Disorder yet? There will be. Used to be the “Monday blues,” but we have to understand that people who are sad on Mondays are actually very sick… and should get time off of work… and compensation from their health insurance. And above all, therapy.

Sorry if I sound really cynical (it’s just my Cynical Mental Illness Denial Disorder… so I really can’t help it)

Many commenters on the original article noted that 1 in 5 are also identified as liberals. Coincidence?

Seriously, though, I think that the adage “figures don’t lie, but liars can figure” is demonstrated by the article and the agency.

The age group fits the normal physiology and discovery in that the frontal lobe of the Brain has final development in late teens and early twenties. Also certain stressors can alter Brian Chemistry. This is often termed PTSD. Some other studies place Brain disease at about 5% and the broader term of mental disorder involving physiology at another 5% for a total of 10%. It is fairly well established that genuine mental illness that would require medical intervention with diagnosis by a Psychiatrist has been estimated at a minimum of 2% and probably as high as 5%.

We at the “Christian Alliance on Mental Illness” recognize the variance in statistics. However, we recognize that this does not minimize the genuiness and seriousness of the medical disorder of Mental Illness that may also be characterized as Brain disease. We are thankful for the advances made and being made in anti psychotic medicine that now keeps many people out of the hospital. We recognize that believing the Gospel and being regenerated by the Holy Spirit can be of great help to the Mentally ill who can understand and believe. However, such conversion may not bring about a physiological healing and treatment is still necessary.

We recognize the need for Biblical counseling and the weakness of many psychological theories. We recognize the helpfulness of all sciences in discovering objective truth that may be helpful. We do not consider Nouthetic Counseling as having a Biblical world view and as therefore often detrimental to true Biblical counseling. We consider the Charismatic world view and view of healing as non Biblical and dangerous and detrimental to dealing with genuine mental illness.

We recognize that the mind is immaterial and an aspect of the soul and therefore does not become diseased. However, the mind operates through and with the Brain in this life and the mental process can become abnormal because of Brain disease. This mental process is the focus of the term “mental illness. ” There is no mind disease but there is mental illness (the process).

Bob… who’s the Christian Alliance on Mental Illness? Do you speak for the group? Got a site you can link to?
It’s interesting to see a group taking the position that the mind cannot be ill but the “mental process” can… I’m still mulling over what the difference really is. But certainly there is much mystery as to how mind relates to the physical organ we call the brain.
